I hate writing out previews for interleague starts. Most of the time, the pitchers haven't faced the batters and most American League pitchers are ones I'm not familiar with. This matchup is only a bit different.
Shaun Marcum (3.50 ERA, 3.74 FIP) spent the majority of his career with the AL Toronto Blue Jays. He's returning to his hometown area of Kansas City to pitch tonight. Unfortunately, the Royals lineup is so new that there are only four players in it that he's faced before: the Royals mainstays Billy Butler and Alex Gordon...and Yuniesky Betancourt. Betancourt isn't any better facing Marcum than he was behind him last year.
He'll be up against RHP Luke Hochevar (6.57 ERA, 3.61 FIP), once one of the great pitching hopes in the Kansas City org, but now looking much more like a busted prospect perhaps through no fault of his own. The sad thing is that he's been great in the minors, racking up 8 great starts for Omaha in 2009 during his last non-rehab stint. He was rushed to the majors in 2008 after only pitching 184.2 innings in the minors and has largely remained there ever since even when his stats indicate that he probably shouldn't. In 2012, he's given up more hits than usual, despite other rate stats staying about the same, and his results are suffering.
