Today In Brewer History: Happy Birthday, Johnny Estrada

On this day in 1976 Johnny Estrada was born in Hayward, California. He was 18 years old when the Phillies selected him in the 17th round (506th overall pick) of the 1997 draft, and four years later he made his major league debut with Philadelphia in 2001.

Estrada had been a Phillie, a Brave (where he made his lone All Star appearance) and spent a single year as a Diamondback when he came to Arizona in a six player deal that brought him, Claudio Vargas and Greg Aquino to Milwaukee in exchange for Doug Davis, Dana Eveland and outfielder Dave Krynzel before the 2007 season.

Estrada caught 120 games for the 2007 Brewers despite almost certainly being the slowest player I've ever seen take the field for this team. He posted a .278 batting average that season but walked just 12 times in 464 plate appearances (for a .296 OBP), and scored just 40 runs despite being on base 137 times.

After the 2007 season the Brewers traded Estrada to the Mets for reliever Guillermo Mota, and the Mets nearly immediately non-tendered him. Estrada played 23 games for the 2008 Nationals but hasn't made a professional appearance since.

Estrada turns 36 today. With help from the B-Ref Play Index we'd also like to wish a happy birthday to 2010 Brewer Jim Edmonds, who turns 42.

Today is also the anniversary of Dave Parker picking up his 2500th hit in a 5-4 Brewer win over the Yankees in 1990. We covered that event in this space last year.
