Today In Brewer History: 1000 For Cirillo

Baseball Reference

Jeff Cirillo is the only Brewer ever to finish his career with exactly 1000 hits, and the last one came on this day six years ago.

On this day in 2006 the Cardinals scored three runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and beat the Brewers 3-2. Jeff Cirillo drove in both Brewer runs with a pinch hit single in the seventh, his 1000th Brewer hit.

Cirillo played his first six major league seasons in Milwaukee between 1994-99, playing almost exclusively at third base and making the 1997 AL All Star team. After brief stops in Colorado, Seattle and San Diego Cirillo returned to the Brewers as a utilityman and bench player in 2005 and 2006 and hit .304/.371/.420 over two seasons.

Cirillo's 1000th hit was also his last one as a Brewer, as he moved on to the Twins for the 2007 season. All told he collected 1598 major league hits over 14 seasons as a member of six teams.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:

  • Milwaukee native and UW-La Crosse alum Craig Kusick, who would have turned 64. Kusick played seven major league seasons between 1973-79 as a member of the Twins and Blue Jays.
  • Rolling Prairie, Wisconsin native and UW-Madison alum Lyman Linde, who would have turned 92. Linde played for the 1947-48 Indians.

Today is also the anniversary of the Brewers getting shut out on the final day of the 1979 season, snapping a streak of over 200 consecutive games with a run scored. We covered that event in this space last year.
