While most Wisconsinites were distracted yesterday, three more Brewers announced that they'll be playing in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Adam McCalvy is reporting that John Axford, Jim Henderson and Taylor Green will play for Team Canada this spring. All three will be in their first WBC.
Green might be the most interesting addition here, mainly because of his position: He's listed on the Team Canada roster as a second baseman. The roster also features former Brewer prospect Brett Lawrie, who is likely to get most of the at bats at third base.
These three additions give the Brewers five members of their 40-man roster in the WBC (Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy will play for the US). The limit for any one team is eight, and McCalvy says Carlos Gomez (Dominican Republic), Martin Maldonado (Puerto Rico), Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada (both Mexico) are some other possibilities.
Like Team USA, Canada plays their pool round games in Arizona from March 7-10, so these Brewers won't be far from the team's training camp in Maryvale. If they advance beyond pool play, they'd go to a second round pool in Miami on March 12-16.
