Today In Brewer History: The last link to the Pilots

The last former Pilot appeared as a Brewer 35 years ago today.

On this day in 1978 the Brewers beat the A's 9-0 on the season's final day. Larry Hisle and Gorman Thomas homered in the game but the most historically notable appearance came from catcher Larry Haney, who went 1-for-4 and drove in a run in his final MLB appearance.

Haney had played in 12 major league seasons as a member of four franchises, including 22 games with the Seattle Pilots in 1969. The Pilots traded him to the A's in 1969 but he returned to the franchise in Milwaukee in 1977 and played his final 67 games there. On this day he became the last former Pilot to appear in a game as a Brewer.

All told Haney played 480 MLB games over 12 seasons, batting .215/.252/.289 with 12 home runs. He appeared in two World Series games for the 1974 A's, but did not come to the plate in either contest.

Today is also the 43rd anniversary of the Brewers signing outfielder Sixto Lezcano as an amateur free agent in 1970 and the 24th anniversary of Robin Yount hitting career home run #208 in 1989, tying Gorman Thomas for first on the Brewers' all-time list. We covered those events in this space last year and two years ago, respectively.
