What we learned this week: October 26, 2013

Mike McGinnis

This week's lessons include another chance at a Gold Glove for the Brewers, the value of the franchise, and the new streak of games by starting pitchers to monitor.

Carlos Gomez is the Brewers only Gold Glove finalist.

We all expected this for a while, but now it is official. Carlos Gomez was officially named as a finalist for a Gold Glove award on Friday. The only question that remains is if he can win the award. His competition this year is Andrew McCutchen and Denard Span, and McCutchen is the incumbent for the award. If the award is truly about defense, Gomez would be a lock for the award. However, we've seen that it's not all about defense, and tends to go to the better offensive player with at least good-looking defense. Can Gomez overtake McCutchen and break the Brewers 30-year streak of no Gold Gloves?

The new streak to monitor is the streak of games without 10 strikeouts.

For a few years, we had been monitoring the streak of games that the Brewers starting pitchers had put together without a complete game. That streak came to an end thanks to Wily Peralta earlier this season, but another one is currently in progress. The Brewers went through 2013 without record a 10-strikeout game, the first time they have done that since 2003. This streak probably won't last as long as the streak without a complete game, but a drop in strikeouts was just a part of many bigger problems that the starting rotation had.

The Brewers are worth $615 million.

That's the most recent evaluation by Bloomberg, who released their estimated values of all MLB teams earlier this week. It comes in at 22nd among MLB teams and 4th among NL Central teams. Considering that Mark Attanasio & company paid around $200 million for the team, it looks like they will get a good return on that investment some day.

Minor League Review

Here are the minor-league notes for the week:

- Taylor Green was re-signed to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training. He had missed the entire 2013 season with a hip injury, and will compete for a job on the Brewers bench in spring training.

- Santo Manzanillo, Josh Ravin, and Jesus Sanchez were outrighted from the 40-man roster. This brings the total of the 40-man roster down to 35. The only significance of this move for now is that all will be exposed to the Rule 5 draft later this offseason. They are currently assigned to Triple-A Nashville.

- Baseball America released its report card of the 2013 draft for the Brewers, and they covered several players from the draft that have the potential to aid the Brewers in the future.
