Today In Brewer History: Happy Trails, Ken Macha

Jonathan Daniel

The Brewers wrapped up a season and announced a managerial change before the dust had settled three years ago today.

On this day in 2010 the Brewers finished the season in Cincinnati, losing 3-2 to the NL Central champion Reds. Corey Hart's three hits were not enough as the Brewers fell to 77-85 on the season, and nearly immediately after the game we learned that manager Ken Macha would not be returning for a third season.

Macha joined the Brewers in 2009 as the Crew was coming off their first playoff appearance in decades but had also just lost both Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia. He led the team and a depleted pitching staff to a 157-167 record and a pair of third place finishes over two seasons before being replaced by Ron Roenicke, who rode a freshly rebuilt rotation to 96 wins in his first season.

Macha hasn't managed in the majors since this game. All told he was at the helm for 972 games as a member of two franchises, posting a 525-447 record and winning two AL West titles.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 2011 Brewer Brett Carroll. He turns 31.

Today is also the 37th anniversary of Hank Aaron's final major league game in 1976 and the 31st anniversary of the Brewers beating the Orioles on the final day of the 1982 season to win the AL East. We covered those events in this space last year and two years ago, respectively.
