Brewers outright Michael Olmsted to Nashville

USA TODAY Sports

They now have an open spot on the 40-man roster.

Last week we mentioned that the Brewers' 40-man roster was full, and a player would need to be removed if they were planning on adding anyone else this winter. I didn't anticipate it happening this quickly.

Today the Brewers outrighted reliever Michael Olmsted to Nashville, presumably opening up a spot for a future transaction. Olmsted had been on the 40-man since signing a major league deal a year ago, but spent all of 2013 between Huntsville and Nashville. He posted a 5.88 ERA in 55 appearances between the Southern and Pacific Coast Leagues, but walked 6.5 batters per nine innings over that time.

The Brewers could presumably still invite Olmsted to spring training as a non-roster player, because he does have some significant upside: In five minor league seasons he's struck out over eleven batters per nine innings. He posted a 1.52 ERA over 47 appearances in 2012 between high A and AA in the Red Sox organization.
