Today In Brewer History: Happy Birthday, Matias Carrillo

B-Ref Bullpen

This Mexican outfielder's brief stint with the 1991 Brewers was part of his 28-year professional career.

On this day in 1963 Matias Carrillo was born in Los Mochis, Mexico. He was just 19 years old when he made his professional debut as a member of Mexico's Poza Rica Petroleros, starting a long baseball career.

Carrillo was 23 in 1986 when he made his American debut as a minor leaguer in the Pirates organization and in 1991 he reached the majors for the first time, appearing in three games as a defensive replacement outfielder for the Brewers. At that point he was only the 52nd Mexican-born player in major league history. He did not record a plate appearance during that stint, but later appeared in 104 more games as a member of the 1993-94 Marlins.

Carillo went back to Mexico following the 1994 season and played parts of 15 more seasons there in the Mexican League. He was 46 years old when he made his final playing appearance in 2009, his 28th professional season. That was also his first season as manager of the Tigres de Quintana Roo, where he's compiled a 256-166 record over the last four seasons.

Thanks to the B-Ref Play Index for reminding me that Carrillo turns 50 today.

Today is also the 12th anniversary of a 2001 trade that brought outfielder Devon White to Milwaukee and sent Marquis Grissom to the Dodgers. We covered that event in this space last year.
