The long-tenured Brewer pitcher was sold to the Royals on this day in 1979.
You may not recognize his name, but Eduardo Rodriguez was a pretty good Brewer pitcher for a long time. He debuted in the majors in 1973 at just 21 years old, making 30 appearances (six starts) and posting a 3.30 ERA. He continued to swing between the rotation and bullpen for six years in Milwaukee, carrying a 3.86 ERA over 659.2 career innings with 404 strikeouts.
At the time of his departure Rodriguez was the Brewers' all-time leader with 235 games pitched. He's still 13th on that list, and ahead of any current Brewer (John Axford is 20th with 206).
Rodriguez's Wikipedia page also notes that he is one of just three players in major league history to triple in his only plate appearance. He did that in 1973.
With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:
- 1996 Brewer Danny Perez, who turns 42.
- Former Brewer bullpen coach Stan Kyles, who turns 52.
- 1978 Brewer Jeff Yurak, who turns 59. We covered his birthday in this space last year.
