Today In Brewer History: Happy Birthday, Bill Veeck

The colorful owner who cut his teeth in Milwaukee would have turned 99 today.

On this day in 1914 Bill Veeck was born in Chicago, Illinois. He's widely remembered for his wild antics as owner of several major league teams, but many fans forget that his first taste of ownership actually came in Milwaukee.

In 1941 Veeck purchased the American Association's Milwaukee Brewers, and owned the team for five seasons. The team went 421-340 under his tenure, including a 102-51 season in 1944. The especially fascinating thing about these years is that Veeck spent three of them serving in the Marines in World War II. The B-Ref Bullpen says Veeck turned a $275,000 profit when he sold the team following the 1945 season.

Veeck went on to buy the Indians in 1946 and also had stints as owner of the St. Louis Browns and White Sox (twice). He died in 1986, and was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He's also a 2008 honoree of the Appleton Baseball Hall of Fame.

Veeck would have turned 99 today. With help from the B-Ref Play Index, we'd also like to wish a happy birthday to:
