The Brewers' young shortstop turns 23 today.
On this day in 1990 Jean Carlos Enrique Segura was born in San Juan in the Dominican Republic. He was still only 16 when the Angels signed him as an amateur free agent in 2007 and appeared in Baseball America's list of the game's top 100 prospects in 2011 and 2012 before making his major league debut on July 24 of last year.
Segura had made just the one major league appearance when he came to the Brewers in the Zack Greinke trade, but played in 44 games down the stretch for the Crew and hit .264/.321/.331 over 163 plate appearances. Despite the fact that Alex Gonzalez is back in camp this spring, Segura is a near-lock to play most days at shortstop.
By appearing in 44 games last season, Segura became the first player born in the 1990's to appear in a Brewer uniform. Wily Peralta isn't far behind, as he was born in 1989, while Tyler Thornburg and Josh Stinson were born in 1988.
