Brewers re-sign Yuniesky Betancourt as part of effort to find least popular possible transaction

USA TODAY Sports

I wish this was some kind of joke.

Just as I was getting over the Brewers' decision to give three years to Kyle Lohse, today they went and one-upped it.

Justin Bopp of MLB Daily Dish is reporting the Brewers have signed "infielder" Yuniesky Betancourt to a minor MAJOR league deal and he's on his way to Arizona for a physical. Betancourt was recently released by the Phillies.

Betancourt has played eight major league seasons as a member of three teams, but hasn't appeared in the big leagues since being released by the Royals last August. You probably remember him as a dreadful 2011 Brewer, where he played 152 games at shortstop and hit .252/.271/.381 while playing defense so poorly that we frequently compared him to things like a pan of lasagna.

Thankfully the Brewers are in a slightly different situation this time. Betancourt almost certainly should never get an opportunity to play shortstop at the major league level for this team with Jean Segura, Alex Gonzalez and (potentially) Donnie Murphy around. It's entirely possible he was just signed to provide minor league depth since Taylor Green is opening the season on the DL, Jeff Bianchi has also been limited lately and Murphy appears poised to make the big league roster. He is apparently going to be on the big league roster, though, which makes me want to break something.

Even if it were only in the minors, having Yuni back in the organization makes me all kinds of uneasy.
