Today In Brewer History: Happy birthday, Eric Young (Sr.)

Doug Pensinger

This 2002-03 Brewer turns 46 today.

On this day in 1967 Eric Young was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was 22 when the Dodgers took him in the 43rd round of the 1989 draft, but he was in the big leagues with Los Angeles just three years later.

Young had already had a long major league career as a second baseman and appeared in 1237 games as a big leaguer when the Brewers signed him as a free agent before the 2002 season. He went on to appear in 138 games for the worst team in franchise history*, hitting .280/.338/.369 with 31 stolen bases. He appeared in 109 more games for the Crew in 2003 before being traded to the Giants.

Young was the Brewers' Opening Day starter at second base in both 2002 and 2003, and he's one of just nine second basemen in franchise history to make multiple season-opening starts.

Thanks to the B-Ref Play Index for reminding me that Young turns 46 today. We'd also like to wish a happy birthday to:

Today is also the fourth anniversary of Jason Kendall's 2000th major league hit in 2009. We covered that event in this space last year.

* - This designation is tentative pending the final result of the 2013 season.
