I have no idea what to make of these bizarre start times in Washington.
It'll be 5:05 pm Central time tonight when Ross Detwiler (4.13 ERA, 3.78 FIP) takes the mound against the Brewers, making his first appearance in the month of July. Detwiler last pitched against the Mets on Friday, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings.
Detwiler's arsenal is almost exclusively fastballs. He'll throw the low-90's pitch about 88% of the time, mixing in the occasional slider and changeup.
Detwiler is 0-2 against the Brewers in two career starts, including a 4.2 inning, four run outing last season. No active Brewers have faced him ten times or more, but Aramis Ramirez and Rickie Weeks have homered off of him.
He'll face Kyle Lohse (3.63 ERA, 4.25 FIP), pitching on short rest after a rain-shortened outing on Sunday. Lohse lasted just 1.2 innings before the delay ended his day against the Pirates, and did not allow a hit.
As you might imagine, pitching on two days' rest isn't exactly familiar territory for Lohse. He's making his 375th major league start tonight, but hasn't started on this short of rest since 2007.
The Nationals roughed Lohse up a bit last season, scoring 12 runs on 17 hits against him over 11.2 innings through a pair of outings. Five current Nats have faced him ten times or more:
Tonight's lineup is as follows:
Norichika Aoki RF
Jean Segura SS
Carlos Gomez CF
Aramis Ramirez 3B
Jonathan Lucroy C
Rickie Weeks 2B
Sean Halton 1B
Logan Schafer LF
Kyle Lohse P
And in the bullpen:
- Michael Gonzalez pitched one inning (19 pitches) last night.
- Francisco Rodriguez pitched one inning (19 pitches) last night.
- Jim Henderson pitched one inning (13 pitches) last night.
- John Axford pitched .2 innings (18 pitches) last night.
- Tom Gorzelanny and Burke Badenhop both pitched multiple innings on Monday.
- Brandon Kintzler and Tyler Thornburg combined to pitch eight innings on Sunday.
Tonight's early start may get pushed back to a late game if the weather becomes a factor. The forecast calls for a game time temperature in the low 80's and a chance for scattered thunderstorms.
