Today In Brewer History: So long, Stan Kyles

Jonathan Ferrey

The only coach fired in the Ron Roenicke era left the team a year ago today.

On this day a year ago the Brewers entered play at 45-56, in fourth place in the NL Central and 16 games back of the division lead. They were coming off yet another night where the bullpen snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, turning a 5-2 sixth inning lead into an 11-10, eleven inning loss. The Brewers responded by firing bullpen coach Stan Kyles.

This move is perhaps most notable because it's the only time in Ron Roenicke's Brewer tenure where the Brewers have acted to make a coaching change. Pitching coach Rick Kranitz, bench coach Jerry Narron, third base coach Ed Sedar, first base coach Garth Iorg and "eye in the sky" John Shelby have all been with the team for three years now, and all but Shelby have been in the same role for all of that time. The hitting coach position marks the only other change during Roenicke's tenure: Johnny Narron was hired when Dale Sveum left to become manager of the Cubs.

The Brewers went 38-26 down the stretch following Kyles' firing, and their team ERA (which had been 4.30 before the move) dropped to 4.10 over that span.

With help from Brewerfan.net and the B-Ref Play Index, we'd like to wish a happy birthday today to:

Today is also the 24th anniversary of the end of Robin Yount's 19-game hitting streak in 1989, the longest of his career, and the 12th anniversary of the Brewers acquiring pitcher Ruben Quevedo from the Cubs in 2001. We covered those events in this space last year and two years ago, respectively.
