Today In Brewer History: Jenkins Jinxed

The slugger's longest homerless streak reached its final game seven years ago today.

On this day in 2006 the Brewers beat the Reds 5-2 in an Independence Day matinee at Miller Park. Over 39,000 fans paid to see the Brewers score five runs on five hits, including Corey Koskie's final major league home run. What they did not see, however, was a home run from Geoff Jenkins.

Jenkins was mired in the longest homerless streak of his career at this point, having last hit one on May 20. He had played 38 games in the interim and hit .237/.316/.296 with eight doubles, but had not put a ball over the fence.

The streak is, of course, far from being a Brewer record. Jim Gantner once went 494 games between long balls from 1987-91. But it was still a long streak for someone who hit 212 homers as a Brewer. It ended the next day when he took Todd Coffey deep.

Today is also the second anniversary of Shaun Marcum hitting a grand slam in the Brewers' loss to the Diamondbacks in 2011, which we covered in this space last year. It's also the third anniversary of Yovani Gallardo straining his oblique and having to go on the DL in 2010, which we covered in this space two years ago.
