Today In Brewer History: Wegman's 33 outs

Author's personal collection

The Brewers and Angels met in a pitcher's duel for the ages 27 years ago today.

On this day in 1986 the Angels and Brewers met on a Monday at County Stadium, but for 15 innings both teams left their bats at home. Despite a combined 14 hits, the two teams were still scoreless in the 16th when Wally Joyner's three-run triple gave the Angels a lead and an eventual 3-1 win.

The star of the game for the Brewers had to be starting pitcher Bill Wegman, who allowed just four hits while pitching eleven scoreless innings. It was the second longest scoreless outing in franchise history, trailing only a 1974 game where Jim Colborn kept the Orioles off the board for 13 frames.

It's unlikely we'll ever see another Brewer match this feat. No Brewer has pitched more than nine innings in a game since Cal Eldred in 1993.

With help from Brewerfan.net and the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:

Today is also the fifth anniversary of the Brewers acquiring CC Sabathia in 2008, which we covered in this space last year, and the 35th anniversary of Mike Caldwell pitching a complete game shutout against the Yankees in 1978, which we covered in this space two years ago.
