Tonight's Matchup: Brewers (Estrada) @ Cardinals (Lynn)

David Welker

You can't spell Wednesday without "ween," which is kind of like "win."

Tonight at 7:15 the Brewers and Cardinals play one of their five remaining scheduled games, and the fun will start with Lance Lynn (4.37 ERA, 3.52 FIP) on the mound. Lynn last faced the Reds on Thursday and allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings, walking four and striking out six. He allowed three home runs in that game, and it was only the second time he's given up more than one.

Lynn had a 2.76 ERA after his first 12 starts this season, but it's been a long time since then. He has a 5.56 ERA over 102 innings since, allowing opposing batters to post a .288/.362/.437 batting line. The 177 innings he's thrown this season are already a career high, and his fastball velocity is down half a tick this season, from 93.2 mph in 2011 and 92.8 last season to 92.3 in 2013.

The Brewers have had pretty good luck against Lynn this season, knocking him around to the tune of ten runs (eight earned) on 17 hits over eleven innings. Three current Brewers have faced him ten times or more:

He'll face Marco Estrada (4.49 ERA, 4.28 FIP), whose season is headed in the opposite direction. He pitched seven innings against the Angels on August 31, allowing four runs on nine hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. This is his first appearance in September.

Estrada posted a 2.61 ERA in the month of August, and at least some of that success can probably be attributed to the fact that he allowed just four walks in 31 innings in the month. He also allowed four home runs over that time, though.

This is the fifth time Estrada has faced the Cardinals in 2013. In his previous four starts he has an 8.14 ERA over 21 innings, walking eleven and striking out 18. Nine current Cardinals have faced him ten times or more:

Tonight's lineup is as follows:

Norichika Aoki RF
Jean Segura SS
Jonathan Lucroy C
Aramis Ramirez 3B
Carlos Gomez CF
Scooter Gennett 2B
Juan Francisco 1B
Logan Schafer LF
Marco Estrada P

And in the bullpen:

It's hot in St. Louis again today, so it could be another sticky night for baseball. Wunderground says to expect a game-time temperature around 9 to drop to the mid 80's as the night goes along. Winds will be relatively light and blowing from right to left with a slight chance of thunderstorms.
