The Brewers came off of their off day hoping to get the offense going. Unfortunately, they couldn't do it against Masahiro Tanaka and the Yankees.
Early in the game, starters Yovani Gallardo and Masahiro Tanaka matched each other pitch for pitch. Both starters allowed only a hit and a walk in the first three innings. Then, the Yankees got there offense going in the fourth inning. A Carlos Beltran walk and Brian McCann single put two runners on for Yangervis Solarte, who hit a three-run home run to put the Yankees on the board. They followed it up with a Brett Gardner single and Brian Roberts double to go up 4-0.
Meanwhile, Masahiro Tanaka cruised through his first five innings, allowing a total of two hits and a walk. The Brewers would break through in the sixth inning and score their first two runs thanks to back-to-back doubles by Carlos Gomez and Scooter Gennett, followed by a single for Jonathan Lucroy. However, Aramis Ramirez grounded into a double play to end the threat.
The Brewers put together another threat in the seventh inning with back-to-back singles from Jean Segura and Logan Schafer. The Yankees took out Tanaka at this point and put in reliever Adam Warren, who ended the threat by striking out Lyle Overbay, followed by Brian McCann throwing out Logan Schafer trying to steal second.
The Yankees tacked on a run off of Brandon Kintzler in the eighth as Carlos Beltran led off the inning with a double, then pinch-runner Ichiro Suzuki stole third and scored on a groundout. Meanwhile, the Brewers would get another run of their own in the ninth inning on a Mark Reynolds solo home run, but couldn't manage any other offense.
Yovani Gallardo was roughed up for the second straight start, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks. He did strike out seven in the game. On the other side, Masahiro Tanaka only allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk. He left the game with two runners on base, but both failed to score. Zack Duke and Rob Wooten contributed scoreless appearances in the loss as well.
The series continues tomorrow against the Yankees. Kyle Lohse starts for the Brewers, and CC Sabathia makes his first appearance at Miller Park since 2008. First pitch is at 6:10 pm.
