The Milwaukee Brewers have had a player lead their league in doubles nine times. The most recent was just two years ago, when Aramis Ramirez socked 50 two-baggers in 2012. Lyle Overbay led the NL with 53 in 2004, setting a club record in the process.
In the AL, Paul Molitor and Pedro Garcia bothled the league in doubles once while Cecil Cooper and Robin Yount had the honor twice each.
In 2014, the Brewers have a good shot at another doubles crown as Jonathan Lucroy currently leads the National League with 40. It would be a first if Lucroy does win the crown: No catcher has ever led his league in doubles.
Interestingly enough, a large part of Lucroy's doubles have come away from Miller Park despite a near-even split on games played in Milwaukee and away games. Just 10 of his 40 doubles have come in front of a home crowd. That may not be great news going forward as just 18 of the team's remaining 37 games are on the road.
In addition, Lucroy has seen his doubles production taper off. In April/March he had 10, then 11 in May. That dropped down to seven in June and just six in July. It seems like his gap power has returned in August, though: The Brewers' catcher already has matched his July output while just barely over halfway through the month.
Lucroy will have to maintain strong numbers if he hopes to lead the league; There are some talented hitters right behind him. Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is closest with 39 (but he's out for the season) while Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is just five behind. Others who could make a push are Denard Span, Daniel Murphy, Adrian Gonzalez and Yasiel Puig. Khris Davis is just nine behind Lucroy heading into the stretch.
There's a fairly decent shot that Lucroy could even break Overbay's team record. At his current pace, he would hit another 12 to fall one short. That's if Lucroy plays each of the team's remaining games, which won't happen. Still, one hot stretch is all it might take.
Jonathan Lucroy has a chance to make history, and the Brewers would certainly love to see him get hot to stay there.
