Tyson Ross

David Stearns should use his "revolving door" of a 40th roster spot and offer up a deal to former Padre Tyson Ross. Ross was non tendered by San Diego earlier tonight and is now an unrestricted free agent. He only made only one start last year as he came back from shoulder injuries, but when he's been healthy he's been one of the better pitchers in the National League.

By all accounts, Ross is ready to go for the start of 2017 after undergoing TOS surgery on his pitching shoulder. While that sounds bad, most major league pitchers make a full recovery and the rehabilitation time is not as lengthy as say Tommy John. Most reports say that he will be ready for spring training in February. Ross, still just 29, could slot into the rotation as a guy who can eat innings and strikeout a batter per inning. He walks more batters than you'd generally like from a starter, but his K rate somewhat offsets that number. He limits HRs well, although some of that success could be attributed to PetCo park.

Ross was an All Star in 2014, pitched about as well in 2015 and then got bit by the injury bug. He could provide the Brewers another mid-rotation starter that can eat innings and help bridge the gap to some of our younger pitchers coming up through the minors. He would also allow us some roster flexibility if we wanted to trade a current starter like Guerra, Nelson, Garza. Personally, I've always liked Ross' ability to get groundballs and strikeout MLB hitters. I think he would be an interesting get for a club like Milwaukee on a 1 year, prove it deal and be a good chip to trade at the deadline provided he can get back to his previous form.
