Stephen Vogt to undergo shoulder surgery and will miss all of 2018 season

18

Stephen Vogt has yet to suit up for regular season action for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018, and it turns out that he won't get the chance to play for our local nine at all this year. Vogt has been sidelined all season with a shoulder issue that began in Spring Training, but wasn't believed to be all that serious. He started the year on the 10-day disabled list and reported to AA Biloxi for a rehab assignment in the beginning of May, but experienced a setback during a game on May 5th. Vogt's re-injured shoulder was examined by team doctors and by renowned surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and it was determined that he would need a significant surgical procedure to repair the damage. Vogt also had a major operation on his throwing shoulder back in 2009 while playing in the minors for the Tampa Bay Rays, and the 33 year old understands that his career may now be in jeopardy after a second such procedure. Vogt made his big league debut back in 2012 with Tampa Bay and has spent parts of six seasons in the big leagues with the Rays, Athletics, and Brewers. He was named an AL All-Star in 2015 and 2016. In 521 games and 1,808 plate appearances, Vogt has batted .251/.310/.416 with 57 home runs for an OPS+ of 99 while throwing out 26% of the batters that attempted to steal on him during his career. The Brewers rank #22 in the league in terms of offensive production from their current catching combo of Jett Bandy and Manny Pina, so it stands to reason that they may be in the market for an upgrade behind the plate come July.
