Final Roster

During the Brewers broadcast Sunday against the cubs Daron & Bill interviewed Ned Yost.

Yost basically said this, the roster is set, we are taking 12 pitchers, and it is just a matter of sorting out who are the 4 & 5 pitchers and who fills out the bullpen.

So given that tidbit, I'm guessing that Bush's performance yesterday definitely helps solidify his role as the #4 starter.

So, what do y'all think it'll look like. Here's my guess (yes, including the obvious):

C Miller
1B Fielder
2B Weeks
3B Koskie
SS Hardy
LF Lee
CF Clark
RF Jenkins

C Moeller
U Hall
U Hart
OF Gross
IF Cirillo

SP Sheets, Davis, Cappie, Bush, Ohka
P  Wise, Kolb, JDLR, Lehr, Capellan, Helling
CL Turnbow

If Sheets starts the season on the DL, I think they give Helling a spot in the rotation and take Jared Fernandez north.

Dana Eveland and Kane Davis are the odd men out in the bullpen I think.

I think Eveland is definitely headed for AAA to work on pitching as a starter for a full year. He definitely broken down at the end of last year and is overthrowing in spring training.

With Lehr pitching well in spring training I don't see where Kane Davis fits in for the Brewers, unless the crew gives up on JDLR, which I don't see Melvin doing... however, if Yost gets his way...

Yeah, so what do you think?

Does Gross get the spot as 25th man, does Bush surpass Ohka on the depth chart, and will Eveland make the major league club?

Eveland
I agree with your assessment. I also think Eveland starts the year in AAA, and the rotation figures to be what you have there - Ohka and Bush to round it out (IMO Bush being the #5, at least to start the year). Per the Journal Sentinel, Bush had a really solid outing yesterday and should be a fine bottom of the rotation guy.

I'm just hoping to god Sheets is healthy once the Pirates roll into Miller Park and we start playing for real.

I also have to plead ignorance on Gross -- who would be the alternative?

oops
I now see Jeff already blogged about Bush's outing yesterday. Should have scrolled down first!

It's understandable
given the volume of my blogging yesterday :)

Kane Davis
does he have options left?  Given how he performed at the end of last year, I thought it was almost a given that he'd be on the team to start the year.  I would assume he's on the 25-man ahead of Lehr, and maybe both of them are ahead of Jared Fernandez, if Sheets is on the DL.

Bush v. Ohka: I think Ohka is the #4 guy, especially until Bush actually gets the rotation spot!  Ultimately, it doesn't matter much ...it all comes out in the wash after the first couple times through the rotation.

Gross: unless there's somebody else I'm missing, I figure he'll be on the team as the LH PH...and he might be considered more "ML-ready" than Hart because he has a bit more experience.

I'm generally torn about the 12-man staff thing...I think it's ridiculous that a team would need such a thing, and I'd be surprised if Ned could find enough work to keep all those guys sharp.  But on the other hand, if your bench is Cirillo/Hall/Hart/Gross/Moeller, you don't need anybody else.  Unless you could get another really solid LH PH option...maybe.  Even then, the Crew doesn't need more than 23 or 24 players on the ML roster.

12 pitchers
That's the way I feel about it. I support carrying 12 pitchers because they can, they have the depth on the bench to do it.

In general, I think it's going to be tough to be disappointed with or worried about the roster we'll have going into Opening Day. Just a nice mix of veterans like Cirillo and youngsters like Hart. Even with injuries, we'll be OK.

Unfortunately yes
Chad is more or less a lock.

I would love to see Mike Rivera get a shot, but Ned's been pretty quiet on that topic, and I tend to take quiet as goin' with the status quo.

Eveland'll be fine, he's still young...he'll be back at some point this year, no doubt.

Jeff Suppan is due to be activated from the DL on Tuesday. What should the Brewers do with the rotation?
  • Insert Suppan and demote Dave Bush to the bullpen.
  • Insert Suppan and demote Son of Clung to the bullpen.
  • Insert Suppan and use Bush and McClung in a home/road platoon.
  • Kick Suppan to the pen and keep Bush and McClung in the rotation.
  • Trade J.J. Hardy for A.J. Burnett and leave the other three guys alone in a room with a sharp stick and the knowledge that there's only one open spot on the team.

Robinade - only 12% juice, but 100% Robin.

I saw it in Pick and Save today, located in the milk cooler area with the other single serve tasty drinks (I apologize for the crappy resolution on my phone's camera... I've dropped it one too many times). I think it was like $1.29, so it's pretty fairly priced and a healthier alternative to the tasty sugar-filled sodas we all know and love.

It's pretty much regular lemonade, but it's definitely good - much better than Minute Maid. My sister says it tastes like Robin's sweat is in it...

How she knows what his sweat tastes like is beyond me...
