After inking historic deal, top prospect will not have to wait to make debut

Jackson Chourio, the Milwaukee Brewers’ top prospect and the No. 2 prospect in baseball according to lists from Baseball America and MLB, will make the major league roster out of spring training, according to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Curt Hogg. The team has not announced the decision, but Hogg cites unnamed sources. Chourio, who turned 20 on March 11, will be the youngest Brewer on an Opening Day roster since Robin Yount in 1974.

The news is not entirely unexpected. Chourio signed a historic eight-year, $82-million contract (that can increase to 10 years and $132 million with two team options), the largest ever for a player with no major league experience. The deal meant that there was no longer any financial incentive for the team to keep Chourio in the minor leagues, as his major league service time became irrelevant for contract purposes.

A solid spring all but assured Chourio’s place in the big leagues. He has slowed a bit over the last week and his power has yet to show up, but he looks far from lost at the plate. His .286/.314/.347 line was apparently enough for the team to feel confident giving him a roster spot.

Where he will play will be a bit of a question for now. The scouting reports on Chourio rate him as a plus defensive player, with center field as his likely long-term home. The Brewers have no shortage of good defensive options in the outfield, and Garrett Mitchell, Joey Wiemer, and Sal Frelick could all spend some time in center. That’s without mentioning Blake Perkins, another excellent defensive option who may not make the Opening Day roster given Milwaukee’s depth.

It’s an exciting day for Brewers fans. Chourio is arguably the most-hyped prospect the Brewers have ever had; no Brewers prospect since Gary Sheffield reached as high as Chourio has on top prospect lists. We will hope that Chourio’s Milwaukee experience goes better than Sheffield’s, but if Chourio’s career numbers look anything like those that Sheffield put up (a career .292/.393/.514 hitter with 509 home runs), I don’t think anyone will complain. In the meantime, I’m with Christian Yelich: let him be a kid, and enjoy the ride.

A potential preview of Milwaukee’s Opening Day lineup?

The Brewers are back at home this afternoon, and we may be getting a peek at the Opening Day lineup. Many of the expected regulars are in today’s lineup. Garrett Mitchell is leading off with William Contreras second and Christian Yelich third. Rhys Hoskins is in the cleanup spot with Willy Adames and Sal Frelick following. Joey Wiemer, Brice Turang, and Jackson Chourio finish up the lineup.

Getting the start on the mound is DL Hall. This is Hall’s second start and third appearance of the spring. In his previous start against the Athletics, he pitched two innings and allowed two runs and five hits. He also had two scoreless innings on March 3 against the Diamondbacks in relief. More recently, he pitched a simulated game in between his last start and this one.

Also scheduled to get work in today’s game is Bryse Wilson, J.B. Bukauskas, and Trevor Megill. All three are expected to be in the Brewers bullpen this season.

Here are the full lineups for today’s game. It will be on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network, with first pitch set for 3:10 p.m.

New-look rotation anchored by Peralta is an X-factor for Milwaukee this season

Looking back at our starting pitcher preview from 2023, the rotation might be the most changed area for this roster. Corbin Burnes is now a Baltimore Oriole, Brandon Woodruff is out for most, if not all of, 2024, and Freddy Peralta is now the team’s ace. Beyond those three, Eric Lauer and Adrian Houser are both gone. Wade Miley is back and will be Milwaukee’s No. 2 starter whenever he’s healthy, which may or may not be before the start of the regular season.

Aaron Ashby could be used as a starter or as a long-relief option, while other options include Joe Ross, Colin Rea, Robert Gasser, and DL Hall, among others.

Let’s take a look at Milwaukee’s starting pitching depth entering 2024.

Freddy Peralta

Peralta is coming off a strong finish to his 2023 campaign, with a 2.81 ERA and 103 strikeouts across 73 2⁄3 innings in 13 starts in the second half. He finished the season with a 3.86 ERA (112 ERA+), striking out 210 batters across 165 2⁄3 innings and totaling a 12-10 record across 30 starts. With Burnes gone and Woodruff likely to miss the season, Peralta is now the team’s ace, and the question is will he feel the pressure?

Entering the final season of his guaranteed contract, Milwaukee has a team option on Peralta for both 2025 and 2026. He’s struggled in two spring training appearances thus far, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and a walk with four strikeouts across 5 2⁄3 innings. He’s projected by Baseball Reference to total 150 innings of work this year, with a 3.78 ERA and 178 strikeouts.

Wade Miley

Miley had a strong 2023 in his return to the Brewers, and he signed to another one-year deal this offseason, which includes a mutual option for 2025. In 23 starts a year ago, Miley went 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 120 1⁄3 innings. At 37, Miley isn’t the starter he once was, but he can still keep runs off the board and provide a solid 5-6 innings on any given night.

He hasn’t pitched this spring as he deals with left shoulder soreness, making him questionable for Opening Day. He threw two innings in a simulated game on Saturday, his second time throwing off the mound this spring. He’s projected to accumulate 123 innings in 2024, with a 3.73 ERA and 95 strikeouts.

Joe Ross

Ross, 31 in May, signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal this offseason. In 98 career games (76 starts) he has a 26-28 record with a 4.26 ERA and 403 strikeouts across 443 1⁄3 innings. He hasn’t appeared in a major-league game since 2021, when he went 5-9 with a 4.17 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) for the Nationals. His best season came all the way back in 2016, when he went 7-5 with 93 strikeouts and a 3.43 ERA in 105 innings across 19 starts. He made just one appearance for Double-A Harrisburg in 2022 before totaling eight appearances at three levels with the Giants last season, allowing nine runs (eight earned) in 14 innings with 10 strikeouts and five walks.

Like Peralta, Ross has struggled this spring, allowing five runs on 10 hits and six walks with nine strikeouts across seven innings of work. Given that he’s on a major-league deal, Ross will likely make the Opening Day roster despite those struggles. He’s projected to total 58 innings of work for the Brewers this season, with a 4.34 ERA and 57 strikeouts, likely filling a role similar to what Julio Teheran did for Milwaukee last year.

Colin Rea

Rea was a bona fide innings eater for the Crew last season, totaling 124 2⁄3 innings across 26 games (22 starts) with a 4.55 ERA (95 ERA+) and 110 strikeouts. He’s certainly not the flashiest guy on this pitching staff, but he gets the job done if Milwaukee’s offense is rolling. At 33, Rea is on a one-year deal for 2024 with a club option for 2025.

He’s had a fairly strong spring, allowing just two runs on three hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts across eight innings of work in three games. He’s projected to have a similar 2024 to his 2023, with a 4.58 ERA and 106 strikeouts across 116 innings.

Robert Gasser

The next two guys on this list are the more exciting arms, as one has no MLB experience (Gasser) and the other has very minimal experience (Hall). Gasser, who turns 25 at the end of May, is ranked by Baseball America as MLB’s No. 98 prospect entering 2024. He also comes in as Milwaukee’s No. 6 prospect on MLB.com’s rankings. He spent all of 2023 with Triple-A Nashville, totaling 135 1⁄3 innings across 26 appearances (25 starts) with 166 strikeouts and a 3.79 ERA, winning International League’s Pitcher of the Year Award.

He’s had a strong spring, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts in 10 innings of work. If Milwaukee opts to go with a six-man rotation or if Miley begins the season on the injured list, Gasser seems like a strong candidate to be in the starting rotation right away.

DL Hall

As mentioned above, Hall has minimal MLB experience after making his debut with the Orioles in 2022. Now 25, Hall has flashier stuff than Gasser and projects to have more strikeouts than Gasser. Across parts of two seasons, Hall has made 29 appearances (one start) in the MLB, totaling a 4.36 ERA (94 ERA+) with 42 strikeouts in 33 innings of work. Across parts of six seasons in the minors, Hall has a 3.49 ERA with 499 strikeouts in 353 1⁄3 innings of work.

He’s made two appearances this spring for Milwaukee, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work. He projects to have a 4.14 ERA with 39 strikeouts across 37 innings of work this season, although he could far exceed those numbers if he ends up as a back-end arm in the rotation.

Other Candidates

Beyond the six names listed above, there are plenty of other options for Pat Murphy. Aaron Ashby, Jakob Junis, Bryse Wilson, and Janson Junk may all open the season in the bullpen, although any one of them could be a rotation arm if needed. Junk is the most likely of those guys to start in Triple-A, while Ashby and Junis are probably the most likely to get looks in the rotation.

Ashby is coming off shoulder surgery, which likely limits his workload to open the season, while Junis has the most experience as a starter among those guys, with 110 career MLB starts across seven seasons with the Royals and Giants. He’s made two starts this spring, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings of work.

Wilson excelled as Milwaukee’s main long-relief arm last season, making 53 appearances and totaling 76 2⁄3 innings while totaling a 2.58 ERA with 61 strikeouts and a perfect 6-0 record in decisions.

Lastly, as mentioned earlier, Brandon Woodruff could also make a late-season cameo for the Brewers, but he’ll have an innings limit if that’s the case.

Blake Perkins receives over half the vote from fans

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Milwaukee Brewers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

In this week’s Brewers Reacts survey, we asked fans which Brewers outfielder is the odd man out heading into the regular season.

Milwaukee enters 2024 with six viable options in the outfield, and likely only five roster spots to offer. Christian Yelich, Garrett Mitchell, and Sal Frelick seem like virtual locks, leaving Blake Perkins, Joey Wiemer, and top prospect Jackson Chourio to vie for the last two spots.

Receiving over 50% of the vote with a 53% clip is Perkins, followed by Wiemer at 39% and Chourio at 8%. Given that Chourio received such a low percent of the vote, it seems Brewers fans feel the time is now for the youth movement to begin, despite Chourio having only six games above the Double-A level.

While Perkins and Wiemer are both coming off rookie years themselves, both have had their share of struggles this spring. Perkins is really scuffling at the plate, hitting just .105/.174/.279 with two hits in 19 at-bats, although he did pick up an RBI on a sac fly in Sunday’s win over the Royals. Wiemer has fared slightly better, hitting .231/.302/.533 with nine hits in 39 at-bats.

Chourio has been the standout among the three, hitting a strong .283/.313/.661 with 13 hits, eight runs scored, and three RBIs across 46 at-bats. Given the difference in at-bats this spring, it seems manager Pat Murphy is leaning toward Chourio and Wiemer over Perkins.

As we enter the final two weeks of spring, the outfield competition will certainly be one to watch, with the loser of the three-man battle likely headed to Triple-A Nashville to open up the season.

After winning two in a row, Milwaukee entered today’s game against the Royals aiming to extend their winning streak. Former Royal Taylor Clarke started the game for the Brewers, while Cole Ragans was on the bump for the Royals.

Milwaukee got on the board early, exploding in the second inning with three runs. Oliver Dunn hit a double that scored Joey Wiemer, followed by an Andruw Monasterio double that scored Dunn. Blake Perkins then singled to left bringing home Monasterio, and Milwaukee had an early 3-0 lead.

Kansas City responded in the bottom of the fifth off Hudson, with Bobby Witt Jr. driving home two on a single to cut the lead in half. Former Brewer Hunter Renfroe then reached on an infield single that scored Darion Blanco before Garrett Hampson scored on another RBI single, this one from Adam Frazier, knotting it up at 4-4.

The Brewers retook the lead with another run in the top of the sixth when Blake Perkins hit a sacrifice fly that scored Oliver Dunn. Eric Haase then hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh to increase Milwaukee’s lead to 6-4.

The pitching on the back end held up with scoreless innings from Abner Uribe and Elvis Peguero, and the Brewers pulled off their third straight win after a pair of victories on Saturday.

Wiemer and Dunn each had two hits in the win, while Sanchez reached twice on a double and walk. Peguero led the pitching staff with four strikeouts, including three consecutive punchouts in the eighth inning.

Their next matchup will be against the Angels on Monday at 3:10 p.m. as Bally Sports Wisconsin is set to air the game for the second straight day.

At the plate, Jackson Chourio reached second on a two-base error by third baseman Cayden Wallace and later scored on an Eric Brown Jr. walk after back-to-back hit by pitches on Jeferson Quero and Wes Clarke to load the bases.

Milwaukee added a second run in the second inning, with Yophery Rodriguez and Jadher Areinamo hitting back-to-back singles to open the inning. After both advanced on a Tyler Black groundout, Chourio popped out. Brock Wilken and Quero then both walked to put Milwaukee up 2-0 after two innings.

The Brewers added a third run in the fourth, when Black tripled and came around to score on a Chourio single to make it 3-0.

Kansas City slowly chipped away from there, with Trevor Werner starting the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer. The Royals then knotted it up at 3-3 on a two-run single from Brett Squires in the fifth inning following a single and a throwing error by Eric Bitonti.

Given that it was a seven-inning game, the Royals managed to walk it off in the seventh as Josh Knoth struggled with his command, putting runners at second and third with one out before punching out Squires.

Justin Yeager came on to relieve Knoth but threw a wild pitch, allowing Wallace to score and walk off the game with a 4-3 win.

Five Brewers prospects collected a hit in the loss, with Chourio reaching twice on a single and a walk. Black had the only extra-base hit with a triple.

Seven Brewers pitchers combined for 6 2⁄3 innings in the loss, striking out 10 and walking seven while allowing four hits.

The Brewers big-league squad is set to take on the Royals MLB roster tonight in Surprise at 6:05 p.m. Former Royal Taylor Clarke is set to start for Milwaukee with Cole Ragans starting for Kansas City. The game is available on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.

Brewers look to keep up their winning ways

After a week of losing, Milwaukee is now on a two-game win streak with victories over the Athletics and Rangers on Saturday afternoon. It’s been a pretty inconsistent spring for the Crew, so hopefully they can keep winning.

Taylor Clarke will start for the Brewers tonight while Cole Ragans gets the start for the Royals. Abner Uribe, Elvis Peguero, Joel Payamps, and Bryan Hudson are all slated to pitch for the Brewers today as well.

Offensive breakout prospects Jeferson Quero and Jackson Chourio are also slated to start along with third baseman Brock Wilken in the “Spring Breakout” game this afternoon, which can be watched here.

Garrett Mitchell will lead off and start in center field while Owen Miller will start at second base. Eric Haase gets the start behind the dish as he has been hot lately. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
