The Thursday Thinker: Ranking Relievers

Francisco Rodriguez compiled +.858 WPA in 2011, and just missed this list.

In this morning's Mug I linked to a High Heat Stats post that mentioned a game where Mike Fetters faced six batters while throwing just six pitches. That got me thinking of Brian Shouse, who holds the Brewer franchise record (since 1988, anyway) with nine relief outings of exactly one pitch. I wandered around a bit after that, but ended up here: There are 20 relievers in Brewer franchise history who have compiled a career win probability added (WPA) over 1.000. How many can you name in five minutes?

Here are a couple of hints that might help you:

  • Win probability added (WPA) is a stat that aims to measure a player's individual contributions to his team's wins and/or losses. Big League Stew has a more thorough explanation.
  • The list is limited to Brewers who appeared in at least 25 games, and made at least 80% of their appearances in relief.

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

It's highly unlikely anyone can get all of these without cheating. If you do, be sure to post your time along with your score in the comments.

Have fun, and don't forget to post your score in the comments!

The Thursday Thinker: Plesac-Plus Closers

On Saturday, Brewer all-time saves leader Dan Plesac turned 50 years old. Plesac accumulated 133 saves over seven seasons as a Brewer en route to 158 for his career. That's tied for the 66th most all time. How many of the 65 pitchers ahead of him can you name in ten minutes?

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

I will be absolutely stunned if anyone can get all of these without cheating. If you do, be sure to post your time along with your score in the comments.

The Thursday Thinker: Worst Defensive Brewers

Moving Ryan Braun off third base looks like the only logical option, once you put his defensive numbers into historical context.

In this morning's Mug, High Heat Stats noted that Ryan Braun was worth -35 runs defensively at third base in 2007, the third worst defensive season in major league history.

As you might imagine, -35 is easily the lowest single season mark in Brewer franchise history. 35 players, however, have posted a mark worse than -10. How many can you name in ten minutes?

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

The Thursday Thinker: On Single-Position Longevity

Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Corey Hart makes the catch and the out on Houston Astros' Jose Altuve to end the fifth inning of a baseball game on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in Houston. (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan)

We've talked a fair amount lately about the possibility of Corey Hart moving to first base. Hart has played 740 games in the outfield during his major league career, and he's one of just 15 Brewers who have played at least that many games at one position. How many can you name in five minutes?

Note: For the sake of this quiz all three outfield positions are treated as one position.

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

A fair number of you will likely get all of these. If you do, be sure to post your time along with your score in the comments.

The Thursday Thinker: Craig Counsell And OBP

Craig Counsell took a beating for his limited offensive contributions in his last couple of seasons as a Brewer, and even made a joke about it in his press conference on Tuesday. Despite the fact that he hit just .241 and slugged just .326 as a Brewer, though, Counsell was always pretty good at getting on base.

Counsell appeared in 711 games as a Brewer, racking up 2057 plate appearances and getting on base in 33.3% of them. He's one of just 29 players in franchise history to appear in at least 500 games and post an OBP at or above .333. How many of them can you name in five minutes?

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

I'll be surprised if anyone gets all of these, because five minutes really isn't much time. If you do, though, be sure to post your time along with your score in the comments.

The Thursday Thinker: New Arrivals In Cooperstown

We've spent a lot of time this week discussing the Hall of Fame, but does any of it matter? I'm guessing you've already forgotten some of the last 25 players the BBWAA has inducted into Cooperstown.

The Thursday Thinker: 10% Of Fielder

Since debuting in 2005, Prince Fielder has hit 230 home runs as a Brewer. That's the second most in franchise history, and it's easily the most by a Brewer over that timeframe.

In fact, there are only ten other Brewers who have hit 23 home runs (10% of Fielder's total) since Opening Day of the 2005 season. How many can you name in three minutes?

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

A fair number of you will get all ten of these. If you do be sure to post your time along with your score in the comments. There are also eight more "bonus answers:" players who had 12 or more homers but less than 23.

Have fun, and don't forget to post your score in the comments!

The Thursday Thinker: Celebrating The Overcycle

Prince Fielder did a lot of cool things as a Brewer, but he never once hit for an overcycle.

Writing about Richie Sexson this morning made me think of something I kick around from time to time.

The cycle is one of baseball's most notable individual performances, but in most cases it's something of a freak occurrence. Getting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game is certainly a notable feat, but a player who hits two doubles and two home runs has done more to help his team and will get less attention for doing so.

Today we're celebrating the players who have done more and gotten less credit. In franchise history there have been eleven "overcycles:" Games where a player had at least four hits and more than ten total bases. How many of the players involved can you name in five minutes?

The rules remain the same: Post your score in the comments but do not comment on any specific answer until after 6 pm Central time, so everyone gets a chance to try it out without having it spoiled for them. And, of course, there's no reason to cheat here, because there aren't any prizes.

Given five minutes to guess, it's possible a fair number of you will get ten of these. I'll be surprised if anyone gets eleven, but if you do be sure to post your time along with your score in the comments.
