Red Sox recall Smith, sign Ross

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox recalled pitcher Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket and signed catcher David Ross to a minor-league contract Friday.
The moves come prior to the start of a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Smith was 1-4 with a 3.20 earned run average in 35 games with the PawSox this season. He went 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA in five relief appearances in 2008.
Ross was released by Cincinnati on August 19, hitting .231 with three homers and 13 RBI in 52 games with the Reds. He is expected to head to Pawtucket.
In a related move, the Red Sox assigned right-handed pitcher Lincoln Holdzkom to Pawtucket.
