Recap: Kansas City vs. Detroit

Sports Network | August 23, 2008

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Zach Miner threw seven shutout innings, and Miguel Cabrera hit a home run in his second consecutive game, as Detroit blanked Kansas City, 4-0, in the second of three games with the Royals.

Miner (7-4) allowed just three singles and one walk, while striking out three, to pick up the win. Bobby Seay and Kyle Farnsworth each tossed a scoreless inning to complete the three-hitter.

Cabrera homered twice in the series opener, and Saturday's shot was the 28th of the season for the slugger. Placido Polanco finished with three hits, while Edgar Renteria, Magglio Ordonez and Matt Joyce each had a sacrifice fly for the Tigers, who have won four of five.

Kyle Davies (5-5) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and four walks, with four strikeouts in six innings. Mike Aviles, Ross Gload and Mark Teahen each had one hit for the Royals, whose losing streak reached seven games.

Gary Sheffield hit a leadoff double in the second inning and moved to third on a ground out. Renteria lofted the ball to left field for the sac fly, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Carlos Guillen led off the fourth with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a balk. Joyce's sacrifice fly to right made it a 2-0 game. In the fifth, Curtis Granderson walked with one out and ran to third on a Polanco single. Ordonez's sac fly put the Tigers up three.

Cabrera completed the scoring in the sixth with a long home run to left field that cleared the fence and landed in a construction area outside the stadium.

Miner had one baserunner in each of the first three innings, then worked a perfect fourth and fifth. He worked around a two-out walk to Alberto Callaspo in the sixth, then set the Royals down in order in the seventh.

Seay was perfect in the eighth, and Farnsworth walked a batter with two away in the ninth, but struck out Jose Guillen to end the game.

Game Notes

Cabrera's home run gave him 100 RBI this season. He has now had at least 100 RBI in five consecutive seasons...Since the start of the 2006 season, the Tigers are 20-6 in Kansas City...On Saturday, Royals third baseman Alex Gordon was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn muscle in his right leg. Gordon left Thursday's 10-3 loss against the Cleveland Indians with the injury, but was listed at the time as day-to-day. However, further examination revealed a torn muscle -- a deep hip flexor -- that Royals manager Trey Hillman said would probably take weeks to heal...Infielder Callaspo was activated from the disabled list and recalled from a minor league rehab assignment to take Gordon's roster spot. Callaspo was on the DL for undisclosed medical reasons.
