Dan Kolb is back...and expensive.

Two friggin' million?. When we already have a solid bullpen? I guess maybe Melvin felt bad about getting such a great year and a half, plus Jose Capellan, from him so cheaply? This from the J-S:

After a few weeks of cat-and-mouse negotiating, the Brewers returned Kolb to the fold by reaching an agreement on a one-year deal for $2 million. The contract also includes incentives should Kolb, 30, return to the closing role he filled for Milwaukee in 2004, when he emerged as an all-star performer.

The deal was reached with the understanding that Kolb would go into a setup role for Derrick Turnbow, a waiver claim who broke through as one of the top closers in the league last season, matching Kolb's club record of 39 saves set in '04.

How 'bout an understanding that Kolb will pitch like a Major Leaguer this year?

Okay, hyperventilating about $2 million of somebody else's money aside, I guess it's not too bad. Turnbow has been injury-prone in the past, and it's foolish to expect that he'll be healthy all year. I wouldn't mind handing off the job to Matt Wise or potentially Capellan if Turnbow went down, but I suppose a revivified Kolb fits the bill as well. It's still going to be one of the best bullpens in the game, and one of the cheapest, at that.

Meh
At least it's just one year ... if his downward spiral continues, we can just drop him.  It's not as cheap as I had hoped, but at least we have a proven vet in the bullpen.

Added bonus
If he does well, we can always trade him again.  :)  In the even years, Kolb pitches for the Brewers; in the odd years, he pitches for some other team and gets us top prospects.

I like that!
Come on, Danny, make it happen!

He'd have to have a heck of a first half to generate much trade value, though...
