The 2006 Brewers: The Sexson Effect

My last post about Moeller got me thinking about the long-term effects of Doug Melvin's deal sending Richie Sexson to Arizona.  We liked it then, we like it now.  The following players currently in the organization are directly or indirectly the result of that trade:

  • Chris Capuano
  • Dave Bush
  • Zach Jackson
  • Jorge de la Rosa
  • Tomo Ohka
There are a couple of starting rotations in baseball that don't stack up favorably with that.  And, of course, we got the benefits of Lyle Overbay's 2004 and 2005 seasons.  Even if the D-Backs had gotten an MVP-type season out of Sexson instead of the 90 at-bats Richie gave them, I'd still be thrilled with the trickle-down effect of what we got.

on a different note
did melvin and co ever consider trading clark and having hart start in center this year? just a random thought, but i think clark would be able to put up better numbers than clark anyway, and be cheaper... but i have no idea about the defense or anything like that.
At least the Brewers hats are always on clearance

I don't know if it was considered
but I would've been all for it.  I think, though, that the brain trust perceived Hart/Cruz/Krynzel as not containing a solid CF option.  Whether that's true or not...ya never know.  That's one reason I'm a little disappointed that they gave Brady a second year.  Somebody will definitely emerge as a possible '07 CFer between now and then.

hart
I think corey hart is going to make a big splash at spring trainging and they are going to be forced to find places to play him. He may even come off the bench before billy hall in a double switch. Anyway, given that, i think he'd be huge for the brewers in CF. However, I'd keep Brady Clark around as long as he produces. He is a 300/375/425 hitter. That's the real brady clark and i think he'll put those numbers up until he's 40 years old... I like the 2 year deal. As much as I'd hate Clark to go, that contract makes him a pretty valuable commodity in '07.

I like the 2-year deal
Well, I think we need Clark this year, because as high as we may be on Hart, he really hasn't done anything yet that says "I'm the centerfielder of the future."  Heck, I was wondering if we were going to try him at third as the stopgap until Braun is ready.  It'd be nice, though, if we see enough in 2006 that might make the brain trust pencil him in at CF for 2007.

If that's the case, then we have a .300-hitting but aging CF in Brady Clark with one year left on a pretty reasonable deal.  Because of his age, Clark was never the long-term answer in center --- but I'd think we would get quite a bit in return if we were to trade him.  (For some reason, I'm obsessed with the way in which veterans leave the team.  If Carlos Lee walks away after this year without our getting anything in return, I'll be depressed for a month.)

"C'mon, boys, let's get 'em some RUNS!" --- Darren Sutton, pretty much every game of the 2005 season.
