Greg Maddux a Brewer!

I don't know about you, but I could use something to distract me from the woeful goings-on on the field.  All hail The Chicago Sun-Times!

What could be motivating Maddux is the fear of baseball suddenly vanishing from his life. He'll make $9 million in the final season of his Cubs contract, a hefty amount for Jim Hendry or any other general manager to keep paying if Maddux has another humdrum year. There has been talk he'll slip up the interstate highway to sign with the improved Milwaukee Brewers, who have a new owner who spends bucks and a pitching coach who happens to be Mike Maddux, Greg's older brother.

Of course, it goes on to say how that wouldn't happen.  Still...A rotation of Sheets - Doug Davis - Greg Maddux - Chris Capuano - Bush/Ohka wouldn't be so bad, would it?

wow
i could see it now:

maddux comes to milwaukee in 2007 to pitch for his older brother. with rickie weeks, jj hardy, and prince fielder leading a potent brewers offense, and maddux, davis, capuano and sheets all twirling magnificent seasons, the brewers look like a mix between the 2003 florida marlins and '82 brewers and take it all home. maddux then retires as a brewer with a world series ring.

so that's how it's going to go down...

Then, in the World Series...
...Greg Maddux convinces Mike to come out of retirement, and Mike Maddux proceeds to pitch a perfect game to end it.  Gary Sheffield calls Ned Yost to tell him he'd take a pay cut to play for Milwaukee.  Yost tells him to take a hike.

I love Greg Maddux
more on this later, but I haven't heard a rumor that made me this happy, since...well, okay, that Overbay trade was pretty cool :).

more on Mad Dog
This article is basically just a reporter trying to stir up rumors about an extension, but ...hey, it's all we've got to go on. The Cubs are hardly falling all over themselves to bring him back, it would seem.

It's right that Boras will probably look for a multi-year contract...while I would love to have Maddux in a Brewer uni next year, I'm not so sure about '08 and '09.

Then again
What if Greg and Mike start fighting?  You know, big league pitcher egos plus sibling rivalry.  I can see Mike Maddux saying, "well if you think it's so easy, YOU coach these guys," and we'd have no pitching coach.

On the flip side
maybe Mike would come out of retirement and we'd have two crafty old righties in the rotation. With Greg Maddux on the team, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't need a pitching coach. :)

Monday night
Thinking about his start on Monday night makes me even more excited about the slim possibility of this happening. Anyone else watch it? He's still an artist. Unbelievable movement on his fastball.

Supposedly he's on the market, but I don't see the Cubs trading him to Milwaukee. I also doubt this is very accurate. Pretty early for the Cubs to be giving up on this season.
