Rumor: Carlos Lee Traded to the Twins

Just a rumor, but who are we to let truth get in the way of a good rumor?

INSIDE INFORMATION:

Carlos Lee has been traded to the twins for:
SP Boof Bonser
INF Nick Punto
OF Michael Cuddyer
and 2 prospects.

I would have been able to post this thirty seconds ago, but the 300 character minimum is making me add extra text.  Stupid 300 character minimum.

i wanna know who the prospects are!
obviously, in that deal, that makes a difference.

I hope this is just a rumor...Punto???

You hope this is just a rumor!
Man, screw Punto, he can get the rest of the guys lunch. That's a not a bad deal, IMO. Especially if one of the prospects is named Garza.

I've found nothing to support it
But it would make sense: Cuddyer and Punto each play multiple positions, and we love our flexibility.  A team of Bill Halls!  Break out the pink bats!

I don't quite get Cuddyer: we don't really need ourfielders (unless Jenkins goes...).

Allegedly the Red Sox are working on a huge multi-team deal (per Yahoo!).

Cuddyer
He does play second & third, I don't know how well. If he really does come to the Crew, the de la Rosa trade looks infinitely worse.

Hmm. That is odd.
OK, so you're Doug Melvin and you need a utility infielder.  Also, every 5 seconds, someone is asking you if you're trading Carlos Lee.

It seems to me, if you know you're going to entertain trading Lee, you don't do any other moves until you see what Lee gets you.  It shouldn't be hard to get a mediocre utility infielder thrown in.

That Doug made the Tony/JDLR trade makes me think that JDLR was never going to pitch for Milwaukee again.

well...
Cuddyer is more than that.  He'd be an above-average offensive third baseman, I think.

Punto's inclusion makes me think this is a slightly stale rumor--like, it was being bandied about before the Graffy deal, and Punto was basically a throw-in to solve that problem.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 27, 2006 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Cuddyer
his "natural" position is third, but apparently Gardy doesn't like playing him there.  I think 2B was a desperation-type move when there was no where else to put him, and no one else to play second.

Cuddyer+Bonser isn't bad if the prospects are worth anything at all, though you have to figure that Cuddy would mean that Koskie goes elsewhere next year.

I'd bet...something of value, anyway, that we are not getting Matt Garza.  Now...I wouldn't mind Kevin Slowey one bit :).

http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?pl=458713&tm=cumXXX&bp=p

He's overshadowed by Garza, but in many ways he's the Gallardo of that system.

I am opposed to this because ...
Of Cuddyer and Punto.  Bonser I'll take.

Oh, and the two prospects must be Liriano and Mauer.  I think they'll pan out.

Punto Power!
Third base is an obvious position for which the Twins need to upgrade, but GM. Terry Ryan says he's "less than enthused" about replacing Nick Punto, who helped spark the team's recent surge. Ryan likes that Punto gives the Twins energy, a stolen-base threat and solid production from the No. 2 spot. And while Punto, 5-9 and 186 pounds, is not a prototypical third baseman, Ryan cites the Angels' Chone Figgins and Dodgers' Cesar Izturis as similar types at third. ...

Remember...
In the Twins clubhouse, eyes grew wide when the Lee suggestion was made, but staff members insisted they had heard very little of substance on the trade front.

Stay tuned.

Don't punt on Punto
I'm sure he'll be a fine addition.

I have a hard time calling Carlos Lee a Twinkie.  That alone makes me wonder about this rumor.

just imagine
how tough it would be to call him a Twinkie to his face!

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 27, 2006 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

And then there's Boof
Even if it were just Caballo for Boof...that's not awful.  I don't know that the Twinkies will be able to re-sign Carlos after the season --- he really IS just a 2 month rental.

For us, the holdup seems to be getting any drafted pitcher to the majors.  In out starting 6, only Sheets was actually drafted by us, and the bullpen are also castoffs from other organizations.

I guess if I had to choose between Boof and the compensatory pick...I choose Boof.

"Choose Boof!" is a great bumper sticker.

good point

While we wait for El Caballo news...
Here's something else to mull over:
The Dodgers, according to a source familiar with their talks with Milwaukee, tried to persuade the Brewers to ship them Carlos Lee for a package centered around shortstop Cesar Izturis but were rebuffed.

Cesar Izturis?  Really?

And some more
Courtesy of CBSSportsline.  It's funny: they start talking about the Astros (my pick to win the Carlos Lee Sweepstakes), but look and see what team they end with.
The Houston Astros, having watched Roger Clemens endure another shutout the other night, are the-season-is-slipping-away-from-us desperate to add offense. They are aggressive on several fronts, sources tell CBS SportsLine.com, including with Milwaukee's Carlos Lee, Washington's Alfonso Soriano and yes, especially, Tejada.

[snip]

So now the key heading into the final few days before the July 31 deadline well could be the Brewers' Lee, who is better than sugar plums and fairies in the visions of several clubs. The New York Yankees, Houston, Detroit, Minnesota and St. Louis are among those interested.

Problem is, first, Brewers GM Doug Melvin must decide to move Lee, and Melvin has spent most of the past week agonizing over that. The Brewers were tied for sixth in the NL wild-card standings at midweek, 5½ games behind Cincinnati, after losing consecutive games to Pittsburgh -- and six of their past eight.

Melvin was telling clubs he intended to spend Thursday's off day deciding what to do with Lee.

The pros: Keep him, make a run at a playoff berth and retain the goodwill of Milwaukee fans who just recently have begun to put their faith and trust in an organization that has spent most of the past decade as a lost ball in tall weeds.

The cons: Lee is going to be a free agent this winter, the Brewers are risking losing him for nothing, and what if they decide to keep him and then fall out of the wild-card race two weeks from now?

Indications are, especially with Bowden's high asking price for Soriano, the Brewers could knock the monuments right out of Washington if they make Lee available, because clubs in search of a bat view him as the same sort of difference-maker as Soriano.

Take Minnesota -- and forget the rumors that the Twins are chasing Soriano. They did that last year, offering Texas a package of four solid prospects (which the Rangers rebuffed, of course). This year, sources with knowledge of the Twins' thinking say that Minnesota is far more interested in Lee than Soriano -- partly because they are not going to give up top pitching prospect Matt Garza, their first-round pick in 2005, in a Soriano deal.

If the Brewers make Lee available, the scorching hot Twins, who have won 34 of their past 42 games to catch the World Series champion White Sox in the AL Central and wild-card standings, likely would slide him into their lineup between Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer, dropping Torii Hunter to sixth and Michael Cuddyer to seventh.

A fade
The White Sox are saying that they're not making any deadline deals, that the trading deadline (and not their overrated pitching) is causing them to lose too many games due to a lack of concentration.

Also, allegedly, there's less interest in Abreu, with the Yankees only offering 2 A-ball prospects.  (Again, allegedly.)

I would think that it goes from a seller's market to a buyer's market very quickly: if we don't have a deal in place by Monday, then the salty swag we'd get in return will start to get less and less, umm, salty.

My guess is Saturday.  If a deal isn't done by Saturday, one won't be done.

just adjusted the poll to add the Angels...and it looks like the people who voted for Nowhere have now voted for the Angels.

Whoops.

I guess...
...one way or another, he's getting traded.  If Melvin decides to keep El Caballo, I say we appeal to the Supreme Court.

Is it too soon to start making the hanging Chad Moeller jokes again, or do I have to wait until he's back with the major-league club?

great line

That sounds like something a mother could say to a young child, in a wide, wide array of circumstances.

Awesome.

Oakland?!?
From tomorrow's J-S:
Facing long odds of getting to the post-season and the very good possibility of losing Lee to free agency after the season, Melvin has no choice but to listen to serious offers. A rumor of an imminent deal with Minnesota earlier Thursday proved to be false but there is plenty of interest in Lee, including suitors such as the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics.

I think Billy Beane makes phone calls just to drive up the price for other teams, but...I really can't see that the A's would benefit from Lee.  They're not getting great offensive performance out of their outfield, but they have great defense, and Carlos would, to some extent, cancel himself out, compared to, say, Milton Bradley.
