Rangers package breakdown

Francisco Cordero: He's struggling this year, having blown tons of saves earlier in the season, but he has electric stuff and was the Rangers closer in '04 and '05.

Money: this year he's making $4m, and the Rangers hold a club option for $5m next year.  If he has a good last two months with the Crew, he'd probably be worth it to any number of clubs in trade.  Or he could be let go as a free agent, and if he has that aforementioned strong couple of months, he could be an "A" free agent--we could get the same draft pick(s) we would've gotten for Lee!

Kevin Mench: His power is down a notch from last year, at 12 HRs and an OPS just under .800.  Not a ton of walks--in a lot of ways, he's Carlos Lite.  He might hit better against the weaker NL Central pitching, I don't know.

Money: He's making $2.8m in his first year of arbitration.  I would imagine he'd be worth $5m or so in arby next year, up to $8-$10 million in 2008 if he has a strong 2007.

Laynce Nix: Young centerfielder, was a highly touted prospect and basically gifted the CF job last season, but either played his way out of it, or Buck Showalter doesn't like him.  He's turning 26 in October, so some of the luster has faded, and with Gary Matthews Jr. having a big year, he's less and less a part of the Rangers' future.

Money: He's got 2 years of service time under his belt coming into the season, which could mean he goes to arbitration for the first time next year.  (It may depend on how much time he accrues in '06.)  Because he hasn't played much this year, he'll be cheap in arby this offseason, probably no more than $1m.

Roguejim points out we're also getting Minor League pitcher Julian Cordero, who probably doesn't matter much one way or the other.

*sigh*
I just don't get this trade.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a die hard baseball fan that has the inside knowledge on every player on every team but.. Mench, Nix and Cordero for a top tier player like Carlos Lee and a top prospect like Nelson Cruz?  I don't get it.

I've really learned to trust Doug Melvin over the years.  The guy has spun straw into gold more times than I can count so he's earned the benefit of the doubt from me..

But looking at this trade from the outside in leaves me awfully skeptical.

Here's to hoping Doug spins some more gold from what looks an awful lot like straw to me.

winner.
I'm calling it a winner because Mench is where Lee was 4 years ago.

Yes, but...
Nelson Cruz could probably hit as well as Kevin Mench right now.

maybe
but i'm assuming Cruz is overhyped.

UGH
alright. so by getting Nix we just exiled a post-hype prospect (DLR) to acquire another one. Nelson Cruz is better than Nix.

Is Cordero any more than Turnbow? A closer who had a couple good years coming back to earth?

Will Kevin Mench and Geoff Jenkins combine to form the most aggravating corner OF's in baseball?

although, as i write that, if Mench plays left and Jenkins right I'll be terribly upset. However, if Hart gets a starting job and Mench/Jenkins platoon (which makes sense) then I'll be slightly happier.

slightly.

Carlos Lee (MIL) is traded to LAA for McPherson, Morales, Saunders, Kendrick, Wood, Aybar, Mathis, Je. Weaver, and Napoli...

won't happen
I love it it (Hart in Left, Mench/Jenks in Right) but it won't happen. Yost is losing my faith with regards to the youngsters (Hart, De La Rosa, etc.)

wow.
look at Mench's splits.

Please, please, please, Mench/Jenkins platoon, Hart gets RF, even a Hart/Gross platoon. Heck, let's go Gwynn/Clark too.

The six headed monster lives (and might post a .950 OPS...)

:)

hmm.. yea..
I agree with comments on the previous post, I guess can understand the Lee for Cordero and Mench; another guy to try our closer spot and a trade filler so-so outfielder we dont need.

But trading Cruz?!? And getting Nix?!?
Those ones i'm not too sure of.

Hopefully the little Cordero will be a good future prospect, otherwise I can't see many upsides to this trade.

I wonder if they'll fly Cordero in asap like Graffanino, I'd like to see him close tonite, hopefully after another strong Ohka start.

Mench fills in where Jenkins sucks
Looking at Mench's numbers, he hits better against lefties than righties and hits better on the road than at home, perfect for platooning with Jenks! (just looking for the silver lining here)

Melvin said yesterday
that a lot of teams were asking about Hart.

We'll have to move someone...

If we trade Hart
and don't get a super-mecha-pitching-prospect, I will be very sad.

And then auction off this blog to the highest bidder.

(Unfortunately, the highest bidder will only offer ALL-STAR CLOSER Mike Williams, and I'll have to settle for that.)

Could be the wave of the future
Maybe the feel the Cruz's (and possibly Hart's) upside won't be more than Nix and Mench's.

Nah, I don't buy it either.  If you're a Ranger, I don't see how you don't love this deal.  You get Lee and (likely) the left-fielder of the future.  You save a TON of money when Lee walks.  PLUS you get the compensatory pick.

Someone needs to slap Melvin upside the head.
