To Those Disappointed; Whatcha Got?

Ok, so I can understand people wanting some major return on a Carlos Lee deal. He appears to be a superstar hitter (he's not, he's closer to average than elite) and Doug Melvin has done it before, think what he turned Sexson into.

Two major, major problems exist though.

1.) Lee is not the hitter people think he is, in fact, he has already started his second half free fall (AND ... might have hurt his wrist).

2.) You just can't get top pitching prospects for a 2 month rental of an above average OF. That would be disastrous for a club.

So when you look at the results realistically, and realize that we got a ML closer, probably for 2007 too, an ML left fielder, probably for 2007 as well in exchange for losing two months of Lee, it's a slam dunk. The funnest (maybe saddest, i don't know yet) part about this is that the Brewers want to play for this year. When has that ever happened? Sad about losing Cruz? Strikeouts kept him off this team, and may end up getting Jenkins traded tomorrow too. They lead to inconsistency, Melvin has mentioned recently that he has been very concerned about the consistency of this offense. He knows that we've been pretty lucky so far, look at our record in 1 run games and our pythagorean record. Don't be surprised if another move or two are made this weekend. If we are going to compete for real in '07 we don't have time to let Cruz adjust to the majors. He's overhyped too, he's got an inflated batting average due to good luck, a .365 BABIP. We'll find out if he is for real or not though, sounds like he'll be starting in RF tonight for the Rangers.

Still not convinced that we could not have done much better. Bring me a trade? Who do you want, Jered Weaver, Erwin Santana? One of those two guys? No deal, ungettable. Unless you want to start talking Cappie.

Caballo for Jeff Mathis + B/B- pitching prospect
That's what I've wanted all along.  I've asked for more, but would've happily settled for that.  I think it's doable, and I'd prefer that to what we got.

Then again, I gather the Angels weren't all that serious...they don't really have a place to put Carlos like some of the other contenders do.

Lee
Might ride the bench with the Angels. I don't know that I'd start him over Rivera. Maybe Garrett Anderson goes to the bench, but If I'm the angels I don't know that I give up Mathis on the chance the Lee outproduces Anderson for 2 months? Or for that matter Tim Salmon who can step into that spot too.

You are right, Carlos doesn't clearly have a spot. And isn't a huge upgrade as it is for Texas. If I'm the Angels, I ride out with what I got.

Isn't Mathis the #1 catching prospect right now? If you were the Angels would give up Mathis for Lee, straight up, forget the pitching prospect. I wouldn't.

Mathis was their #1 catching prospect
Now Mike Napoli overtook him and is their starter.

In other words, they have two rookies who were prospects coming into the season...plus a very good backup in Molina.  Scioscia likes Napoli, doesn't like Mathis.  Mathis was as expendable as Dioner Navarro was to the Dodgers.  I believe Stoneman has basically said as much.

yeah...I forgot about that
The Bonser/Cuddyer deal looks pretty good right now.

Bonser
Ok, you can have Boof but you have to pick up the rest of Lee's salary. And we think Boof is going to play a role in september as we make a playoff run. What can you toss in for us to have something to show this year, and after Lee leaves in free agency?

I know you think Lee is overrated here
but I'm pretty sure you're underrating him.  He's probably the tenth best player in baseball right now, and he's an upgrade over pretty much any left fielder you can name other than Soriano and Berkman (and maybe Manny).

Boof and a prospect is pretty reasonable for that, without the Brewers picking up any salary.  I'm not really arguing with the value Melvin got; I'm just saying it's misplaced.

If you're
the twins, you are doing Boof AND a prospect for Lee? we should take that to a twins blog and see if they don't laugh us out of town. Let's nail down the prospect though so we give them something firm.

You can't look at what Lee did in one half season and judge him. He should theorectically be worse than last year right? Being another year removed from his peak.

Look at the June (1.050), July (.711), August (.744) and September (.758) he put up last year.

Look at the June (.952), and July (.792) he's put up so far. And look at his last two weeks. If you were a reasonable scout assesing talent, what kind of August and September do you think he'll put up, especially since he's a career .832 hitter with two very good ~.890 seasons.

Now, would you trade a high pitching prospect for 2 months of average production?

Not me.

You do...
...if you're starting left fielder is Jason Kubel, who has 8 HRs on the year and whose batting average dropped 30 points since the beginning of July.

If you're serious about a run and can add Carlos Lee without giving up anyone on your major league squad, I think you do it, and willingly.  I'd even say, no doubt about it.

But different strokes for different GMs.  Abreu and Soriano probably won't move for a similar reason.

Boof
Interesting discussion guys. I think roguejim is overrating Bonser, though. A lot of people think his ceiling is as a back of the rotation innings eater. I think the Brewers already have two guys that have a ceiling at least as high as that in Eveland and Jackson. I know it never hurts to add more pitching prospects, but let's not act like Boof is anything more than a back of the rotation guy. If he ever ends up putting even number 3 starter type numbers I'll be pretty surprised.

I just like saying Boof
Choose Boof!

Cruz
Strikeouts didn't keep him off the team, the presence of Lee/Jenkins/Hart did. This trade could easily be simplified as Cordero for Lee, which is an undersell.
