Braun Wins ROY

It's official, in one of the closest ROY races ever, Braun beat Tulowitzki 128-126. I for one never thought there should have ever been a doubt, as he put together not only one of the best rookie years recently, but in the history of baseball.  Now all we need is the Prince to snag the MVP! You can read more about it here:

Nice
Now on to competing with Prince for MVP every year.

Brewers will have two players hit 50 home runs next year.

My God Yost is coming back the 2008 season is already a disaster and they have not thrown a pitch yet. ;)

Agreed
I think this was way too close... granted the Rockies finished well, but what does that have to do with ROY, I could see that for MVP, but not ROY...

Also is it Braun's fault he didn't play for two months? Defense is part of it, but his offense more than made up for the incredible numbers he put up.

Congrats to Ryan, and now for an MVP!

Good for him!
(And no, it shouldn't have been that close.)

G-d Damn Right he wins it
Tell me where your .987 Fielding Percentage cancels out his 1.004 OPS.  Just wondering.  2 points, get out of here.  And who the hell thought Kyle Kendrick was the 2nd best rookie behind tulo, putting Braun 3rd.  Get the f*ck out of here.  Morons.
Ryan Braun is the Ed Hochuli of Third Basemen. Prince is now Chubber Lang

by hyattff2003 on Nov 12, 2007 2:21 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i agree
braun deserved it, and i'm pumped he won it, but why shouldn't it have been close?  his fielding actually did cancel out a lot of his hitting value...if i recall correctly, he and tulowitzki finished the season with nearly identical WARP3's even though braun hit so historically well.
all you got's some shiner bock and three or four chords

by somethingvague on Nov 12, 2007 3:13 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so true
when i first looked at the voting, i looked to see how he ended up with a 3rd place, and i see Kyle Kendrick stole one of brauns away. i want to know whos the fool that casted that one,i mean seriously, there is no way anyone thought he was honestly the 2nd best rookie in the NL

by DoubleJ235 on Nov 12, 2007 3:22 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ugh
Anyone notice the ESPN article mentions he didn't qualify to win the NL slugging title, even though you can still win by adding the hitless plate appearances (and he did win). The MLB.com article also doesn't mention it beyond setting the rookie record.

But hey, whatever.

And so it begins...

My favorite comment on Purple Row was "Never mind the fact that Ryan E-5 Braun couldn't field a beachball with a harpoon..."

Attempting to stop
a groundball-velocity beachball with a heavy harpoon sounds difficult, if not impossible.  Not to mention separating the deflated ball from the harpoon and somehow throwing it to 1B in time.

Reply with the equally cryptic, "Tulowitzki couldn't slug his way out of a saltdish."

Yeah, but...
Whoever heard of Tulowitzki before October anyway? :)

My favorite
from our friends at Purple Row:
Poll every GM and ask them this question:

If you had Troy Tulowitzki, would you trade him straight up for Ryan Braun?

How many would say yes?  I'm guessing none --and that includes the Brewers GM if he's being honest.

It's amazing that BroJB is able to look into our soul.  I'll take Braun, thanks.

my personal favorite
is after he says: Tulo will the starting All-Star game SS for a decade.  The fact that he didn't win the ROY will be little more than a curious historical footnote.

Then they went on to say how hes better than Reyes Rollins and Hanley Ramirez. I think if you should poll every GM and see if they would trade tulo for Hanley Ramirez?
How many would say yes, im guessing all of them-- and that includes the rockies gm if he's being honest.

honestly they cant belive he is the best shortstop in the NL thats just a joke.

Go Braun!
No question he deserved it.  His offense was simply incredible, and though defense is important it doesn't compare.  He and Tulowitzki might have had similar "WARP"s or whatever, but Tulowitzki also had more help defensively at 1B etc than Braun.  Slugging is something you do yourself!

by stevie ray Braun on Nov 12, 2007 6:15 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

PS...
And Tulowitzki is barely a rookie.  Defense improves with experience and he was just a few games short of being a rookie last year.  Braun is the real deal.

braun and fielder
i really think and hope, as was mentioned above, that these guys will battle for n.l. mvps for years to come. congrats ryan!

This is interesting
A no vote for Braun as ROY from Baseball Prospectus.    He has a point, though defense isn't going to win you many awards like this.  (It tends to win things like division titles, though.)

Baseball Prospectus sucks.
Magical WARP numbers look nice, but there are too many intangibles to boil it down to that.  Tulowitzki (maybe) was the best defensive player in the NL as he claims, but the top slugging % in the NL is always going to edge out the top defense.

I'm not necessarily making a specific case for Braun, but good hitters change the entire layout of the game around them.  Managers spend their times deciding how to pitch around good hitters, giving others in the lineup higher "WARPs".  Good hitters can wear down good pitchers, giving their entire team a better chance to win.

Yeah, defense is important too, but managers never decide the game around one really good defensive player.  "Better just try for a sacrifice fly A-Rod, Tulowitski is out there!"

by stevie ray Braun on Nov 13, 2007 11:29 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

BUT
We live in a world of offense. How many ROYs have there been where the player blows offensively but is perfect defensively? I'd guess not many, if any.

It's the times we live in. =/

Video link on MLB
On MLB.com, something called BaseballChannel.tv is allegedly having Ryan Braun live today.

This link got me to it live, but they're talking about the Indians right now.
