Riske business

Buster Olney has the story:

David Riske, the veteran relief pitcher who compiled a 2.45 ERA in 65 games for the Kansas City Royals last season, is on the verge of agreeing to a multiyear deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to a club source.

My bold prediction is 3 years, $13 million.

If it were my baseball team, I'd appoint Riske co-closer along with Turnbow, unless some really good offer came along in which we could get a young-ish closer.  As it is, I'd bet Melvin will keep looking for a trade for someone like Chad Cordero, which would make the bullpen surprisingly strong, moving D-Bow potentially as far back as the 7th inning.

Also, I'd like to make this the official David Riske pun thread.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs to get a bunch of really bad jokes out of my system.

Thread prediction
There will be a few good puns and many bad ones. Nearly all of which will be posted after the Packers game is over.

well
i for one do not find this signing risque' and actually rather like it.

Trade?
I keep hearing Brian Fuentes might be a trade target. It might be easier to deal with Colorado than with Washington, too, right? Fuentes kind of has a (Coco) Cordero-y history, too, being a closer that was removed after a bad couple of weeks.

Here's my (bad) pun: This signing could signify the start of A bRiske Winter. :)

Riske
has a lot of blown saves per opportunity.  I dig this move though.  He is a good pitcher.

by Braunstalker on Nov 29, 2007 6:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He's a setup man
Setup men almost never get saves (being removed for a closer), so looking as saves per opportunity for them isn't telling.

Real mature
Sheesh.

I'll go with 4/$16 mil.

wow...
four years, you think?

I suppose if Linebrink got it, he could, and Riske is probably as good as Danys Baez, who got an insane deal last offseason, but ...please, don't let Melvin be that stupid :).

Weird, but not weird.

Four years seems to be the going rate
And I bet Moustache is feeling enough pressure (or is looking at the remaining unsigned FA relievers) to go for the fourth year.  I guess we'll see!

It is something of a risk, though.  (Note the restraint.)

Maybe not four years, after all
According to Tom H, both sides have seemed to settle on a three-year deal.
It appears the sides have focused on a three-year deal. I just talked to Riske's agent, Nez Balelo, who agreed with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin that the sides are closing in on an agreement.

So that's some good news, if it's true.

I didn't realize
that Linebrink is making close to $5 mil a season.

$13 million is a good guess.  Maybe $14 mil.

A different tact
I think Riske has more Good Days than Banys Daez ahead of him.

Sorry
if my Riske pun was offensive, I wasn't brought up in church, so I don't really know what the Book of David entails.  I didn't mean for anyone to be offended, next time I will read what I am punning.

There's mine.  :)

Solid Move
This would make me very happy! Think of it this way- even if we pay $4M per year that is an $9M per years savings over Coco...which can be spent on another gamble in the bullpen or to pick up salary in a trade for an OF. If this happens...in Melvin we trust.
Go Brewers!

Maybe Tom Cruise knows
the contract details, since he's a well known expert on Riske-y business.

Is a Jeff Nelson signing next?

pre' goo'
I liked Riske back in Cleveland.  He's a good pitcher.  If it's something like 3/12-14, i'll be okay with it.  It's a little much, but he's one of the better guys out there.

I thought from the beginning that it might be a better idea to see what it would take to get Chad Cordero than to look at a lot of these free agents.    As Jeff said, that's not to say Melvin might not still do something like that, though it might take someone like Parra or Villy.

Saaay
Is Riske a Type A free agent?  What would we be giving up to sign him?

Err
Never mind.  He's Type B, so we wouldn't give up a pick.

I wouoldn't
think that the Brewers would even try to sign a type a Free Agent, because if I  remember right we were the last team that missed the the cut for protected picks.

I'd much rather have Chad Cordero than David Riske
I'm not one for bad puns, and I love the way "Adco" rolls off the tongue.
Don't try to do too much with it. Just take the ball the other way.

one plus with Cordero...
it would eliminate some of the usual friction in acquiring a new player.  We'd still have Cordero closing...
