Pirates announce, "We Want a Bad Catcher"

This article entertains me.  Apparently Pittsburgh is going after Johnny Estrada.  They are also talking to Miguel Olivo and Damian Miller.

Miller, I would understand--Ronny Paulino's a solid option behind the plate, and he seems like the type of guy that traditionally gets paired with a veteran backup.  (Think Russell Martin and Mike Lieberthal last year.)  But why Estrada?  He seems like a disaster waiting to happen as a backup, but I don't have a really good argument for why that would be.  (Besides imagining him on the bench most days with a bucket of KFC.)

Another article worth pointing out: if you have a BP subscription, make sure to read Kevin Goldstein's Devil Rays prospect ranking.  As he puts it, "That, folks, is a borderline obnoxious collection of excellent young talent."  Since there are two center fielders on his list, plus B.J. Upton, you wonder if there's a match somewhere between the Rays and Brewers, maybe Fernando Perez, who should be ready by '09 and would push Bill Hall to left or back to the infield.

Perfect imaging
One of my office mates ran over and asked what was so funny!  You description of Newman, on the bench, one arm fully wrapped around the red and white striped bucket as if to say "mine and no you cannot have any" all the while glaring at Nedly is perfect.  (At least that's what I imagined)  Thanks for the chuckle(s)!!!!

Paulino's rubbed people the wrong way
A lot of complaints make him sound like Estrada, a slacker behind the plate.

well...
Estrada rubs people every time he walks by!  There isn't enough room to get around him.
Weird, but not weird.

my favorite part is . . .
The naysayer can point out that with the team consistently finishing so poorly in the standings and drafting so high, there's no reason for the system not to be loaded, but at the same time, there are many perennial losers in the same situation who will still be perennial losers when the Rays (no more Devil) begin to compete for playoff spots within the next two years.

Next: The Texas Rangers.

nice :)
I read that sentence and my brain was shouting "Pirates" so loud that I didn't notice the juxtaposition.
Weird, but not weird.

Damian
I honestly wish the Brewers would have sat sown with him and offered him a coaching job.  Am I crazy for that?
