Meetings Buzz

It increasingly sounds like a Scott Rolen deal is going to happen.  I don't object to picking up Rolen at all, but I'm definitely withholding judgment until I know who is going in the other direction and how much money is coming with Rolen.

Former Brewer Jose Capellan was traded to the Rockies for Denny Bautista.  Amazing how far Capellan's stock has fallen since his uber-prospect season preceding the Dan Kolb trade.  Then again, if he was traded for Kolb at the peak of his powers...well, maybe he hasn't really fallen so far.

I doubt this has to do with the Brewers, but apparently the Nationals are talking to a team about swapping Jon Rauch for a shortstop.  Jim Bowden seems like the kind of guy who would get excited about Billy Hall, and we are looking for a closer...and as far as relievers go, I think I'd prefer Rauch to fellow Nat Chad Cordero.  Again, I don't think that's the discussion that's going on, but it's not far removed from the respective interests of the two teams, and Bill Hall is likely to keep coming up in trade negotiations until the day he leaves Milwaukee.

No so fast!
Talks have reportedly cooled according to Jayson Stark at ESPN.

I never did understand why the Cardinals would consider trading Rolen inside the Division and while Miguel Cabrera is still on the market.  Seems like they could get more for him after Cabrera gets dealt.

However if this was really the offer:

The clubs were talking about a deal that would have sent Rolen to Milwaukee for pitcher Chris Capuano and a top prospect. The Brewers also would have paid all of the $33 million in salary Rolen is owed over the next three years, while the Cardinals would have assumed the $14 million in deferred salary and what remained of Rolen's $5 million signing bonus.

I really really really hope the deal is dead!

Scott Rolen
ESPN's Jayson Stark says that talks may be stalling between the Brewers and Cards on Rolen.

But, the way he describes the deal I'm happy not to do it:

The teams were talking about a deal that would have sent Rolen to Milwaukee for pitcher Chris Capuano and a top prospect. The Brewers also would have paid all of the $33 million in salary Rolen is owed over the next three years, while the Cardinals would have assumed the $14 million in deferred salary and what remained of Rolen's $5 million signing bonus.

Capuano plus a "top prospect" plus we pay all Rolen's salary?  No thanks.

I agree.
I originally liked the idea of acquiring Rolen, but after hearing the details, it sounds absurd.  Paying a damaged Rolen $11m/year is exactly the type a deal (along with Suppan's) that could handcuff the 'stache in upcoming seasons.

That's not even addressing the "top prospect".  Unless said prospect is Mark Rogers, I'm not even going there.

Sheets for Kemp and Broxton?
I'd love for this to happen, but it appears that the Dodgers are going to snag Erik Bedard for this same package.

by senryu on Dec 4, 2007 3:19 PM CST   0 recs

that was my first thought too
Unfortunately Sheets isn't nearly as valuable as Bedard because he'd only be under team control for one more year.

That isn't to say it wouldn't be worth exploring...

Weird, but not weird.

Ditto on Rauch
I think he'd be better than Chad Cordero but I don't really like the idea of trading Hall simply for him. If it was Craig Counsell, then sure, but I don't think any GM would be that crazy. :)

In Brewers-related pitching news, the team invited lefty Chris Narveson and Scott Cassidy to spring training today.

Thinking about the Rolen rumors
The rumor-ville report seems to suggest that the 'stache was cool with the trade but that the Cards backed out.  If that's true, I'm quite worried about his willingness to give up so much and take on so much salary for a chronically injured player.

according to BP the deal isn't dead
John Perrotto just reported:

Milwaukee and St. Louis have the framework of a deal set in which the Brewers would get third baseman Scott Rolen from the Cardinals for left-hander Chris Capuano. What is holding the deal up is haggling over other players that might included in the trade, and also how much, if anything, St. Louis will pay of the $36 million left on the final three years on Rolen's contract.

Ryan Braun is the Ed Hochuli of Third Basemen. Prince is now Chubber Lang

I saw that too
Pretty much, if the Cardinals don't get better offers from other teams, they might come back a-knockin'.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

that's a pretty big holdup
up to $36MM and unspecified players.  I'd say they've got a ways to go, and judging from what I've heard Mozeliak say in the press, he WAY overvalues Rolen.
Weird, but not weird.
