You Wanna Talk About the Real Junk?

This really is more deserving of a diary entry, but I'm personally determined to make Joe Winkelsas the next Brooks Kieschnick-level inside joke among Brewers fans.  As such, I am bound by duty to report to you that Winky is in camp with the independent Atlantic League Somerset Patriots and present to you the following Few Fun Facts About Joe Winkelsas (And Related Topics):

1. Garbage men are rather well-compensated.  A veteran sanitation engineer in New York City can earn over $80,000 a year.  That's pretty good.  In contrast, Atlantic League baseball players apparently make between $700 and $3000 a month.  Not as good.  Of course, there's always the chance that he'll one day again make the Major League minimum, a paltry $400K (give or take an indy league salary or two).

2. The Patriots of Somerset play in Bridgewater, NJ, and are so-named because the first official American flag was flown there; indeed, the 13-star flag of the time is still flown there 24 hours a day by law.  Obviously, Joe is one hell of a model American.

3. "Joe Winkelsas" is anagram for "a jokeless win."  Ironic, because while Joe's pitching resulted in zero wins for the team (they lost every game he appeared in), we've certainly gotten a lot more chuckles out of him than, say, Chris Demaria.

Honor bright!

Update [2007-2-20 21:21:16 by battlekow]: Oops. The Good King isn't actually in camp with the Patriots, but rather the Atlanta Braves.

Seriously
Who gives after a couple poor outings ON A MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM, ONLY TO RETURN THE NEXT SEASON AND TRY TO MAKE THE SOMERSET PATRIOTS?  It cannot be stated in more capital letters.

Who do'ya know wants to buy a car?

Atlantic League
I know it's the in thing now for AA/AAA guys to play for indy league teams until they get a better opportunity, but I've seen some Atlantic League games. While there are certainly some AA-quality players, the overall level of play is more like low-A or worse. That's partly because the level of enthusiasm is even lower.

In other words, if Joe wants to get a shot to come back, he needs to friggin' DOMINATE the atlantic league.

(Or hope that half the pitchers in organized baseball get hurt.)

And by the way
The Good King will never be the cult hero that Brooks Kieschnick is.

Unless, of course, he comes back, pitches decently, and hits a few pinch-hit home runs.

Maybe so
But you can't beat his nicknames (I was remiss not to include "The Good King" in my original post).

Selection bias, dude
Kieschnick is so awesome he doesn't even need a nickname.

And FWIW...
BK is not an inside joke, he is an ICON. I don't include him in polls to make people laugh, but to subtly plant the idea that Kieschnick should be, for example, the starting third baseman on opening day.

I'm starting to understand...
the depth of your feelings on this particular issue.  Consecutive double posts!  Ye gods!

Wink is in Braves' Camp
Sorry boys, but you all mis-read the press release. Winkelsas is in Atlanta Braves' camp -- he signed with them this offseason.  Independent league training camps get underway much later -- most have shorter seasons that begin in May or even June.

There's an alumni thread at Brewerfan on the Minor League Forum that includes updates such as this one.

I enjoy the site here, nice job.

Haha
We never let reading comprehension get in the way of a good laugh here at BCB!

Anyway, this is my grenade to fall on.  Oops.
