Roster Roster Everywhere

Since we last looked, the Brady Clark deal has brought a bit more clarity to the roster situation. As roguejim pointed out, Doug Melvin made some illuminating comments in the wake of the trade:

Melvin said he still expects 23-year-old Carlos Villanueva to make the Brewers' Opening Day roster.

The GM also said the Brewers are leaning toward keeping 12 pitchers on the Opening Day roster instead of 11.

Clark's departure bodes well for Tony Gwynn, Jr.'s chances of making the team, Melvin acknowledged. The Brewers are still trying to decide whether to keep an extra outfielder...or to stick with an extra catcher. Mike Rivera, who is out of options, and the versatile Vinny Rottino are candidates for the latter option.

So, to my mind, the roster currently looks like this:

Catchers:

  • Johnny Estrada
  • Damian Miller
  • Mike Rivera
Infielders:
  • Prince Fielder
  • Rickie Weeks
  • JJ Hardy
  • Tony Graffanino
  • Craig Counsell
  • Vinny Rottino
Outfielders:
  • Geoff Jenkins
  • Kevin Mench
  • Bill Hall
  • Corey Hart
  • Gabe Gross
  • Tony Gwynn
Starters:
  • Ben Sheets
  • Chris Capuano
  • Jeff Suppan
  • Dave Bush
  • Claudio Vargas
Relievers:
  • Francisco Cordero
  • Derrick Turnbow
  • Matt Wise
  • Brian Shouse
  • Elmer Dessens
  • Carlos Villanueva
  • Jose Capellan
  • Greg Aquino
  • Grant Balfour
  • Joe Thatcher
  • Chris Spurling
If Villanueva really is on the team, that means only one of Capellan and Aquino--if either--is going north with the big club. Since Capellan has an option left and Aquino does not, it doesn't look good for the Lesser Cappy. The J-S trade article says the team only plans to keep five outfielders, so maybe scratch Gwynn despite Melvin's above comments, and Al is reporting that the Brewers have requested waivers on Mike Rivera, so all signs point to Vinny Rottino making the club. And that, folks, is your roster.

Update [2007-3-27 2:33:7 by battlekow]: I guess that Aquino does still have options remaining. My bad.

Roster Watch
I noticed that the Padres released Todd Walker Monday.  While I am still not sold that he would be much of an upgrade over Graffasell, the fact that the Brewers now only have 37 players on their 40 man roster gives them some room to manuever.  I'm starting to think that the last open roster spot might go to someone not on the roster as of yet.

Keep on Walking
I watched and heard Todd Walker last year in Chicago and we don't need him.  He might hit 15-20 pts higher than Counselino and slug some more but he really is a butcher with the glove and he will complain about playing time.  Not the kinda guy you want for spot #25

3 for 1
so rivera, gwynn, and rottino for one spot. i would guess rottino would get that??? that would seem to me to be the logical move. i don't know where that would put rivera as i have read he doesn't have any options left. i like the idea of starting gwynn in triple a and seeing if he can get some confidence at the plate.

Villanueva
Villanueva's long-term value still projects to be as a starter, so is keeping him in the bullpen playing cards all day really a good plan?

I'd be happier watching him go every fifth day in the minors than that.

And will Capellan ever close, already?

Cappy Closing...
quick question... why?

Roster
With Wise, Turnbow, Dessens, and Shouse, it would leave 3 among Aquino, Rottino, Rivera, and Villanueva...theoretically, Villanueva could start at Nashville, as a 12th pitcher isn't needed until the start of the Cubs' series on the 6th.  Rottino's versatility would give him an edge over Rivera, but if the Brewers' are worried about Rivera not clearing waivers, then Rottino would be the one to go down...my hope is that Villanueva is the odd man out for the first series, but then is brought up and Rottino sent down once Vargas is needed for the starting rotation...but that would mean Rivera would serve as the backup first baseman, and Rottino would  likely have to catch in Nashville.
