3/31 Game Thread: A game in a real stadium!

Yesterday's game in Texas got rained out, but I doubt anyone's upset about it. However, a certain someone is upset about a certain something. Mench is really letting it all hang out:

"I have proven I can play every day so I don't know why I should sit for a year, get 150 at-bats, and have them take away from my livelihood."

"I still don't know what is going on here," Mench said. "Early on, they said 'it might be like this,' but nobody has said one word to me since, so I'm basically still in the dark. I can read between the lines, I guess. But this is my sixth year in the big leagues and I think I have done enough to be told what is going on either way.

"I don't know how Geoff has handled it so well," Mench continued. "He's been in the same organization for nine years and they don't tell him about what they are going to do. Leaving him in the dark is just not right. That should not be how business is done."

Moreover, Mench is not shy about his desire to return to the Rangers. He and his wife live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

F---. Leave the bastard in Arlington.

Update [2007-3-31 23:4:10 by battlekow]: As NTNgod at BTF points out, it appears someone in the organization counseled Mench that his stance would not be a popular one, as he's altered his rhetoric to highlight the poignancy of his plight and engender sympathy:

"It's good to just start over from the beginning, get a fresh start in camp," Mench said. "It's always tough to start in the middle, new league and everything else.

"I feel more comfortable now. You're going at it together from Day 1. I'm as satisfied as I can be with my camp."

Ominously, it appears Mench's carping has had an effect on Yost, and consequently on Corey Hart's playing time:
"I'm not running a strict platoon in left field, where one can't play in right field. That's my job, to make sure all of them get their at-bats. If you're producing, you're going to get more at-bats. It all depends on the individual."

While Mench will play in right at times, Yost said he would not move Jenkins out of left.

Well that's just fantastic news!

I feel so horrible
for Kevin Mench, who's livelihood is being taken away to the tune of $4 million a year.

Dude, once you hit the free agent market, there are few meritocracies more pure than that of major league baseball.  If he mashes for those 150 at-bats, he'll keep making $4 million a year, and if he keeps whining about that, well, there's no making this guy happy.

Fantasy league
I have 4 Brewers on my fantasy team.  I don't know how I missed Mench.  I sure hope that his Fantasy Ownership Percentage doesn't affect his livelihood.  I'd have a tough time sleeping.

Abominable
I like him when his trap is shut.  Just hit in those 150 at bats and like it, big head.  Is there more the club should be telling you?  Clearly they were trying to get your ass out of here, but no one wanted it.

Suppan
One thing's for sure, Mench'll be watching this game if Suppan has anything to say about it.

His quote about taking away from his livelihood is sickening.

Can't Mench Read the Headline?
"Veterans Mench and Jenkins will platoon in left field"

There, someone told him.

poor Mench
He contributed so much to the team last year, and this is how we show our appreciation.  Seems like sweet justice, since he stole his livelihood from the Brewers last year...

Seriously
Should I create a "Bench Mench" sign for the On Deck festivities tomorrow?  Any other suggestions?  "Big Head: Literally and Figuratively" "Replevin Kevin" "Mench = Stench"  "Mench is French" etc.

If he's looking to turn Jenkins into the team player, he's doing a good job.

What about...
"You can't spell MENCH with more than 125 AB's"

Haha
Big Head, Bigger Numbskull?

I had to look up replevin but I liked that one.

Bench Mench
Can't beat "Bench Mench."

Simple, stark and poignant. Like Mench himself.

Don't rag on the Frenchies. The Brewers could use Francoeur.

Use him for what?
We've got plenty of guys who strike out and don't take enough walks.  I'd take Hart over Francouer any day.

More about Hart
This sounds like Ned using Mench to light a fire under Hart.  His spring has been underwhelming, and Ned's a motivator, ya know.

I really don't think Mench has much leverage within the organization, but they'd be happy to see him put together a solid month for trade value.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 1, 2007 6:46 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

ok
so mench pisses and moans so ned is going to respond by taking at-bats away from corey hart? if he did say that to light a fire under hart, then good. but if he really follows through with his plan, to spread at-bats around between the three of them so mench stays healthy, that is about as gutless a move i've maybe ever seen.

please, trade or release mench. the brewers don't need a $4 million/year crybaby on the bench.

I thought . . .
. . . I'd gotten over being affected by the greed, arrogance, and idiocy of professional athletes.  I figured I'd just live with it.  But when a guy like Kevin Mench talks about what's due him, and about his livelihood, I get upset.  Maybe if he didn't spend $1mil per year on Dale Ernhardt memorabilia he'd have more left over to "live".

How soon we forget
T.O. was just trying to make a deal with the Eagles that would allow him to feed his family.

I hate the 2nd part
Hart is clearly the better player than both mench and jinx.  Why would Yost even consider putting Mench out there.  It is a crime that he is even considering not starting Hart.  We had the same problem last year.  Need wee be reminded of Chad Moeller getting ABs, how about Jinx's May through August?  Yost is too concerned about getting people abs and keeping them happy.  I would rather keep winning.
