Trading Turnbow

Derrick Turnbow has looked good this spring training so far.  Of course, it's a ridiculously small sample size--two innings means nothing in the grand scheme of things.  But it's enough to get us thinking.

Turnbow is not going to be our closer in April, and unless Francisco Cordero melts down like he did last April (and Ned Yost has a twitchy trigger finger), Derrick probably won't be our closer at any point this year.  An injury to Coco is all that would make it happen.

But, obviously Turnbow can close.  There are plenty of teams out there that believe no one can pitch the ninth inning except for guys with ninth inning experience, and plenty more who desperately need a better setup man.  In other words, a few more outings like this for D-Bow, and Doug Melvin's phone will start ringing again.

So, do we trade him?  If so, for what?

I suppose the first question depends more on how the other guys in the bullpen look.  It would be great to have a guy like good-Turnbow pitching the 8th inning, but if Matt Wise looks like the '05 version of himself, and if this is the year Jose Capellan figures things out, we don't need all those guys.  Turnbow's the most expensive, and he's the one we'd be likely to get the most for in return.

Those are a lot of if's, but let's say Melvin does explore trade options for Derrick.  The tough part about having a team like we have is that, aside from third base right now, there's no clear place where we need an upgrade.  Sure, we don't have an all-star at every position, but there's no glaring hole that must be filled.  Maybe Derrick could get us a third baseman better than Todd Walker; on the other hand, I don't know who that guy is that would be available.

I wouldn't mind trading for yet another starter; if the Phillies decided were willing to even up the money (or get closer, anyway), I'd do Lieber for Turnbow.  That would knock Vargas to a swingman role until somebody got hurt, but it would give us a remarkably good (and deep) starting rotation.

The other alternative, as always, is to trade for a prospect.  I don't think any team is going to give up a big-name AA or AAA guy in exchange for Derrick, no matter how good he looks this spring.  But a back-end rotation guy whose team doesn't have room for him right now, maybe like Dustin Nippert or Scott Baker, would suit me just fine.  They could be stashed in AAA until we used them in another trade or called upon them in case of injury.

What do you guys think?

No, No, a thousand times NO!
You can't teach velocity.
And everybody's looking for hard-throwers.
Turnbow has an exclusive admission to the club, and that makes him quite valuable.
He just needs a reliable offspeed pitch.
Keep him.
Bob Gibson threw 9 pitches: "two different fastballs, two sliders, a curve, a change-up, knockdown, brushback, and hit-batsman."

Turnbow
You bring up some really good points, for some reason the thought of trading him never really crossed my mind. I guess I think we should try to get a better thirdbaseman then walker, I have nothing against him thought. I don't really  think we should go after another starting pitcher, I know you can never have enough of them, but I feel like jackson and villanueva have the stuff to compete, along with gallardo who is not far away. I guess I think we should keep him, if cordero would to get hurt, he would really come in handy. The bullpen was suppose to our weakest part but it could turn out to be one of the best in central is everyone stays healthy.

Keep him
I would much rather see Turnbow stay and keep the pen strong.  I don't think Turnbow's going to get you enough of an upgrade at any position to offset his loss.

And trading for a prospect makes zero sense.  The Brewers are set up to make a run right now.

It is an interesting thought...
but I would rather keep the pen strong.  Who knows when someone goes down and we need DT to step up...  Also, I know it's super early, but the way Ryan has been playing, we might not have a huge hole to fill at 3B.

The Brewers turning up the heat song is starting... which only means a spring debut for The Soup...

If we can get something good...
...sure, trade him.  Still, I think the expectation is that Coco will go-go after the season, if he isn't traded at the deadline.  (Or, we have to prepare for the likelihood that your 2008 Brewers will have no coco at the end of the game before going to bed --- hey, I'm channeling Daron Sutton!)

Although I think we should trade all of our reclamation prospects as quickly as possible, and that includes Turnbow, I guess I wouldn't seek out a trade until we know we have someone capable to close in 2008.

"C'mon, boys, let's get 'em some RUNS!" --- Daron Sutton, pretty much every game of the 2005 season.

It really depends
Not actually working in a Major League front office, we have no idea what the league-wide perception of Turnbow is. Some GMs get so daffy over closers that it doesn't seem to matter if the guy has an bad year or was injured--he's "proven." But Turnbow's bad year was really, really bad, and he only "proved" himself for about 2/3 of '05, so it's tough to tell how seriously he's taken.

turnbow for a 3b
i think that's about all i would be willing to do. i think he could improve from last year by not closing and would do a good job in the 7th or 8th inning. i could even envision bringing him in in a bases loaded, one-out jam in the 6th or 7th, for example.

but, like what's been said, if we get a sweet offer, by all means. he's not exactly a franchise player.

Thinking about 3B
"Maybe Derrick could get us a third baseman better than Todd Walker; on the other hand, I don't know who that guy is that would be available."

I don't know what it would take to get Eric Hinske from the Red Sox (he's currently their backup 1B & 3B), or if he's even an improvement over Todd Walker, but he's also a lefty and hits RHP well. He's also from Menasha.

I'm guessing that if we wanted Hinske...
we could have him.  If we were willing to pay his entire contract, the Red Sox might even throw in a C prospect.  I don't know whether the tradeoff on defense is worth it as an upgrade on counsellino.

Hinske
I don't know much about his defense, but his numbers in extremely limited time at 3B last year were good and in 2004, the last time he played 3B full-time, BP had him at +3 and he looked okay on David Pinto's graphs too.

As for the money, while his aggregate salary next year is $5.625M, Boston is only responsible for $2.8M; Turnbow's salary next year is $2.3M.

Sean Berry
I think the Brewers are best keeping T-bow at the moment unless they're blown away.  I can see them jettisoning him at the end of July if they're out of it or another need has arisen ... I just do not see any position player improvement that a swap of Turnbow would net.

by nmc on Mar 5, 2007 3:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

no
Its WAY too early to act like our bullpen is going to be proven enough to think that we can afford to trade DT.  Wise is five seconds from getting hurt at any moment, Coco has shown himself to be capable of an implosion, and there is little reason to bet good-Turnbow on Capellan suddenly figuring things out.

Forget what they could get for the guy.  The bullpen as currently constituted has to many question marks to unload somebody who throws with that kind of gas.

You can't have too many power arms.  Imagine the flexibility of knowing you can go to Capellan, Wise, or Turnbow at any time for 3 outs.  We can turn games into five inning affairs.
