Ned Yost, Stathead

Adam has the story:

Yost recently took some time to clear off his desk at Maryvale Baseball Park, and among the items cleared away were a stack of books related to managing. They included "Baseball Between the Numbers," published by Baseball Prospectus, "The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball," published by Potomac Books, and "The Book on the Book: A Landmark Inquiry into Which Strategies in the Modern Game Actually Work," published by Thomas Dunne Books.

"I've read them all," Yost said.

Wow! Kinda sounds like a calculated political move, at least the mentioning it part, but still, I'm impressed. If you haven't checked out the books he mentioned, you should definitely do so:

Actually
The Book on the Book is pretty lame.  It's better than reading the newspaper, but pretty weak by the (high) standards of the other two.

Confession
I haven't read that one, but I felt odd leaving it off.  The other two are good, though.

Uh Oh
Joe Morgan is PISSED!  Who taught Yost how to read books??

Not quite
It doesn't look like there was a copy of Moneyball on the desk....maybe Melvin has it.

It's a book about baseball
only one book about baseball, written by Billy Beane.  That Moneystatgeeksissyboy book.  I don't care what they're calling it, you are not going to get Joe Morgan to read no damn baseball books.

God damn books clogging up the brain like guys who do nothin but get on base.

And
Clogging up the bases.  Really ruins our ability to manufacture runs.

I am so looking forward to Dusty Baker's "analysis" on ESPN this season.

Oh no!
I didn't know he was going to be doing that!

Thank heavens I a) don't have a TV, b) only watch baseball on mlb.tv, and c) mlb.tv doesn't broadcast ESPN games.

by Jeff Sackmann on Mar 8, 2007 9:49 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I was worried
til I realized you said ESPN, and since I care for neither the Red Sox or the Yankees, I won't have to burden myself with Dusty's "insights"

Of course, it would be fun to watch him complain that the Brewers don't have enough black people to field a team when it gets hot out.

Well, we are moving in the right direction.
Though, once Ryan Braun is called up, I shudder to think what Dusty might say about Jews.
