Between the 10th and 11th

Last night's game ended in a tie after ten innings; it'll pick up tonight at 6:05 ET, to be followed by tonight's game.  Greg Aquino is pitching for Milwaukee and Matt Lindstrom is in for Florida, though both have already thrown an inning, so who knows who's next.  It makes for an interesting managerial decision: does Ned use Coco in a tie game, knowing he might need Coco again in tonight's game?  I would.

Not a lot to say about last night's game, though, except for the bizarro strike zone.  Rick Vanden Hurk had a very nice major league debut...aided by Doug Eddings's huge strike zone.  Vargas pitched well...thanks to the strike zone.  Turnbow was filthy...because if Estrada caught it, it was a strike.  Jorge Julio was awful, because he was the one pitcher in baseball last night who couldn't throw a pitch in the 6 foot by 6 foot square that Doug Eddings thinks constitutes the strike zone.

There were plenty of missed opportunities, as usual, but J.J. Hardy was certainly clutch: runner on second (thanks to a Rickie Weeks steal), and he hits a double in the top of the ninth to tie the game.  Julio may be the worst pitcher on the Marlins right now, and I wouldn't give him another save opportunity ever, but hey, I'll take it.

Also, thanks to everybody who hung out during the game last night.  There were more than 500 comments in the two game threads.  It's way more fun to watch a game that way.  If you haven't joined us during a game, give it a try...nothing like 10 consecutive comments shouting "JJ!!!" to make baseball that much more exciting.

A few other notes:

  • You gotta get angry!  Prince Fielder is getting more vocal.  He doesn't like to lose, it turns out.

  • Looking bad is part of the learning process: Yost said again that Hall isn't going anywhere.  No surprise, but still nice to hear.

  • Will Ben Sheets be a Hall of Famer? Probably not.  But I've started a series at The Hardball Times about which active players are likely to make it--and not just the no-brainer veterans like Greg Maddux.

  • Milwaukee is so a baseball town: There were 19,000 fans at the Indians game at Miller last night.  Barely 10,000 showed up to watch the Brewers in Miami.  (Hat tip, J-S.)

  • In case you're wondering, this resumption business is new: if the same thing had happened last year, we'd be replaying the game from the beginning.  Granted, the umps probably would've waited much longer before they called the game.  As Yost says, it's a good thing that's changed, because both teams would be in trouble playing a doubleheader today.  The Marlins pen will probably be stretched a bit as it is.

And if Ned...
does use Cordero while the game is still tied, who's next to pitch if the game doesn't wrap up soon?

Anyway, somehow I'd feel a bit more comfortable with Dave Bush taking the ball after Aquino is done, and then Dessens gets to spot-start the full game if necessary, than the other way around. Of course, Bush as a reliever has been a bit of an adventure in the past...

by Zeyes on Apr 11, 2007 8:53 AM CDT   0 recs

I second this
The games will basically back to back and Bush could easily pitch whatever it takes to end the first game and then take the ball and start the second game.  I know at least Arizona has done this before and since Bush will have all the time in the world to prepare the fact that it is a relief appearance shouldn't be a problem.

by dixieflatline on Apr 11, 2007 9:45 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Interesting...
I never would've considered that.  The only argument I can think of against it is that there's likely to be a break between games.  So if he threw a few innings in the first game and then had to sit for 45 minutes, it might not be so good to have him go back out there.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 11, 2007 10:19 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the mlb.com preview...
says there'll be about a half-hour break. If Bush was the final pitcher in the first game, that might work I guess, but if the Crew is going to win it we're likely looking at around an hour-long layoff for Bush (Brewers batting after his final inning, then Cordero in for the save).

BTW, the official start for game two is 7:05 ET...will that be the start time for the suspended game now or do they move that up?

by Zeyes on Apr 11, 2007 10:53 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I believe
that's when they're starting the suspended game.

Rain
It's always going to rain in Florida, haha.

Umpires
So how does this work for the umpires? Does Eddings finish the first game and then they all rotate?

I would use Cordero in the tie game as well. One of the advantages the Brewers have is that if it came down to it, Turnbow could (well, probably) close out the second game effectively.

by TheJay on Apr 11, 2007 10:07 AM CDT   0 recs

I would guess so, yes.
In other words, it'll be 2-2 until the 19th inning, when Graffanino throws a meatball to De Aza.  Or something.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 11, 2007 10:20 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Same
I believe it's the same rotation.

I also think that the giant strike zone last night was because he didn't want to get the game over with before the rain started.  Unfortunately, the Marlins and Brewers stuck it to him.

by nmc on Apr 11, 2007 10:47 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

perhaps
though I looked up the numbers last night (link somewhere in game thread #1), and Eddings calls BY FAR more strikes than any other ump in baseball.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 11, 2007 11:03 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Wouldn't it be cool?
I'm sure there are rules against this, but...

Let's say the Brewers take a 1-run lead.  I say we bring in Vargas, to get the save for a game he started yesterday!

"C'mon, boys, let's get 'em some RUNS!" --- Daron Sutton, pretty much every game of the 2005 season.

by roguejim on Apr 11, 2007 10:09 AM CDT   0 recs

yeah
there is no re-entry rule like little league.

Question - about new rules!!
According to the local radio sports guy there is a new rule this year about rainouts.

Have you heard anything?  I'm totally confused as the "new" rules sound like the old rules.

he said that last nights game LAST YEAR would have to start from the beginning.  ????????

I think he is crazy!  Have you heard of ANY rule changes?

by Grinder12000 on Apr 11, 2007 10:39 AM CDT   0 recs

That's what all the radio/tv/print guys are saying
it doesn't quite sound right to me, either, but maybe I'm missing something.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 11, 2007 10:42 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

SO -
"Potentially most consequential is the manner in which games that end in a tie, due to weather or other uncontrollable elements, will be resolved. While previously such games were considered official and replayed in their entirety from the beginning, hence they will be "suspended" and resumed at the point of stoppage."

So LAST year last nights game would have been completely started over??

Am I confused?? I thought this is how they always did it.   hmmmmmm!

by Grinder12000 on Apr 11, 2007 11:31 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

During the 30-minute break
I'll be watching the Mariners-Red Sox game.  Felix vs. Daisuke!

The HOF article at Hardball Times......
Good article, intersting to think who will be the ones who will end up in Cooperstown.

You mention Cordero as a pitcher who will be remembered for a stretch of dominance.  I would add Joe Nathan to that list as well.  Look at his last 3 seasons. His '03 season with SF was also impressive but he didn't get saves that year. Filthy stuff too.

Like Cordero, if he played for a big-market team, he'd be talked about a lot more.  I also imagine that if the Twins could ever get past the ALDS his name value would increase as well.

by Dutch on Apr 11, 2007 11:40 AM CDT   0 recs

Nathan's in the same boat
though I'm writing a whole separate article about AL pitchers.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 11, 2007 11:54 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I missed that....
duh.  it was the NL pitchers article.

Classic
My daughter showed some signs of pink eye this morning, so I kept her and my son home today.  They just went down for a nap, and so I turned on the Cardinals/Pirates game.  It must be my birthday, because the Cardinals team is announcing, and it's not Joe Buck.

Anyway, Joe's replacement should be good for some entertainment value today.  As he recounted yesterday's win in extra innings for the Cardinals, I heard, "And you knew a hit was coming, because Scott Spezio dug in."

A weather note - I live a few miles directly south of Miller Park, and it looks like snow is starting to accumulate now.  If another large crowd arrives for the game tonight, I would expect the parking lots are going to be a mess.

Bill Hall violates rules - and does not get caught
"Batter's box presence: Conversely, an automatic strike will be assessed each time a batter violates the rule requiring they keep one foot in the batter's box throughout his at-bat, except for certain game-play conditions -- during which he is still not allowed to leave the dirt area surrounding the plate."

I swear I saw him leave the box a few times last night!

by Grinder12000 on Apr 11, 2007 11:50 AM CDT   0 recs

I don't get it
You mean he left the box without time being called?  I've never seen that....

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 11:53 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Calling time would nullify the rule I would think
The way I read the rule is that he can not leave the box at all  ??  I know he was pissed off a few times on some of those "strikes" that were being called.

Calling time would just make that a useless rule if they are trying to save time (ie - new 12 second rule between pitches)

by Grinder12000 on Apr 11, 2007 11:58 AM CDT   0 recs

Rule?
I don't have the rules handy, but isn't an at-bat considered to be the time between when a batter steps into the box, and the pitch is delivered?  Plenty of people walk out of the box between pitches.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 12:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Right now
I'm watching Yadier Molina take about 7 steps straight back out of the box after every pitch.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 12:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I have definitive proof
David Eckstein steps out of the box between every pitch.

David Eckstein Represents All That is Good and Holy About Baseball (tm)

And he hustles.  Little spark plug.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 12:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You're probably right
The rule probably does say that you can't leave the box.  I've seen some guys careful to keep a foot in there.  It seems that it is not enforced, though, because guys are stepping out all over the place in this game.

Pujols doesn't even step one foot out of the box.  I'm sure that's just to make the pitcher anxious.  Oops, there he goes.  No one stays in the box :)

Bill Hall Experiment...
I know we have said it a thousand times; but putting him in the outfield is really stupid.  Especially if both Jenkins and Mench are playing well.

I think it's affecting Billy's bat; cause he has looked awful.

Though, I have to give Counsel some credit; he has been playing great!

by engbjm06 on Apr 11, 2007 11:58 AM CDT   0 recs

Patience
I've mentioned before that Soriano looked really bad when he first moved to the outfield, but maybe no one noticed because he was with Washington.  After some time to learn the position, he looks decent out there.  I expect the same from Hall.

Jeez, man, if I didn't know better, I'd think that you had just suggested an outfield of Jenkins/Hart/Mench.  I can't think of a better way to bring Menchkins numbers back to earth than to play them every day.  Let's enjoy the rush while it lasts, but remember...it's Jenkins and Mench.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 12:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

ya
good point...  i guess what i'm saying is, since ned seems to be playing them BOTH quite a bit anyway, why not make Bill more comfortable... but, yes, patience... i just want them to win a freaking game.  hopefully they can get two wins today...

Jenkins
Looks like Jenkins is back in the spotlight.  Marc Normandin has a profile of him at Baseball Prospectus.

Some Marlins guy pisses me off!
I'm listening to Charlie Steiner's show on XM right now and he just interviewed a guy who is somehow affiliated with the Marlins (I wasn't paying that close attention) who made an asinine comment.

Well, actually he was citing "some wag" who made the statement that it took an actual contender to come to Milwaukee in order to get a crowd of 19k into Miller Park last night.

This coming from someone who represents the Marlins, whom I seem to remember had a tough time breaking 5 digits in nightly attendance at their home games last year.

Furthermore, the Brewers freaking sold over 2 million tickets last year! 2 mil. / 81 = approx. 25k.

Sorry for the rant, but I just had to let loose after hearing such nonsense and I knew I would find willing and sympathetic readers here.

Go Crew!

by jlo on Apr 11, 2007 1:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Irritating, but not entirely untrue
The Seligs decimated the Brewers organization in order to show how small market teams couldn't compete without revenue sharing and a modern stadium.  Once Bud got hit his stadium  built and revenue-sharing plan adopted, he faced the prospect of rebuilding the team his daughter destroyed, or making it someone else's problem.  Since his place in baseball is set, he no longer needed the Brewers, and rightly sold the team.  Even though Attanasio is taking the team in the right direction, there is still a widespread belief, in Milwaukee and elsewhere, that the Brewers can't field a competitive team.

I actually thought about that last night.  In a town where 19,000 just want to take in a good baseball game, the Brewers never should have had attendance problems.

Another reason to be glad the Seligs finally sold.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 1:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

slight adjustment
In a town where 19,000 just want to take in a good baseball game for ten bucks ...

Jack those seats back up to $40 (or whatever regular price is), and I doubt even half that many show up for the game.

But it is interesting that such a large number will show up just for baseball--clearly there isn't a ton of rabid Brewers fandom out there, at least not showing itself in the attendance figures.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 11, 2007 1:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Two things, really
You can't really underestimate the influence of the price, and the novelty of it.  That's still a lot of people that want to come out to watch a baseball game between two out-of-town teams.

The other factor is that there seems to be an awful lot of Indians fans in and around Wisconsin.  I'd attribute at least some of that to the phenomenon many Brewers fans can identify with -- the other team we root for.  It's been so long since the Brewers fielded decent teams that many people have simply adopted better teams from other cities.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 2:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

huh?
the place was overrun with Brewers fans.  Sure a few Indians folks showed up here and then, but it was largely a crowd of people who relished in catching baseball for $10.

If there were things to be learned its that:

  1. Wisconsinites LOVE a bargain.
  2. They also love baseball.
Don't complain about Brewers attendance figures.  The fact is they're astoundingly high for a team that has had the incredible unending run of futility we've seen around these parts.  If the Brewers ever consistently contended, they'd pull in 3 million a year, no problem.  They're DESPERATE for a winner.

by Bill on Apr 11, 2007 2:24 PM CDT   0 recs

That's what I said
Many Brewers fans have another team they root for -- in this case I was implying that the Indians are that other team.

I also blamed the Seligs for years of futility that drove attendance down in an otherwise great baseball town.  Attendance figures are rebounding, but it's because Attanasio actually wants to see them win, and will invest money in it.

Well, and the casual fan and national audience continue to believe that the Brewers suck, because they have for so long.  It's going to take a long time to remove the stench of being a loser....which is where we started with that Marlins "insider."

Lineup Game
I think Ned's going back to a (mostly) standard lineup today

Weeks 2B
Hardy SS
Fielder 1B
Hall CF
Jenkins LF
Hart CF
Estrada C
Counsell 3B
Bush P

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 11, 2007 3:54 PM CDT   0 recs

Hart #6?
You can make errors like that and get PROMOTED!  I think Estrada may stick at #5, and I don't know if I really care.
