Game Thread #14: Maybe Vargas Will Go Nine

Whoa.  There's the lineup game, and then there's this:

  • Weeks, 2B
  • Hardy, SS
  • Mench, LF
  • Hall, CF
  • Estrada, C
  • Hart, RF
  • Miller, 1B
  • Graffanino, 3B
  • Vargas, P
I'm trying not to be knee-jerk critical here, so let's consider the positive: that's eight of eight starters who are right-handed or switch-hitters.  I suppose Prince can't play every day, so this seems like a reasonable time to give him a rest, in the middle of a stretch without any days off.

I'm very interested to see how Vargas does tonight, on more than usual rest (not that he's in any kind of routine) and with, presumably, a normal-sized strike zone.  The Pirates hardly have the most potent offense in the league, but it's a different game when Doug Eddings isn't behind the plate.

Go Brewers!

Allright!
Miller can finally improve that .750 fielding percentage at first!

Remember
When Fielder did the splits last night at first? Day off? Or, hurty groinal area?

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe this is Ned working out his rage
As ESK pointed out to me earlier today Bobby Coxs just got an extension so Ned has to bide his time till he can get the Atlanta job that much longer.

Best reason I can think of for this line up ;)

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 6:49 PM CDT reply actions

I'm almost hoping for a close game,
rather then the brewers blowing out the rats tonight.. That way, at least it will be worth it when Ned has to call on Wise, Turnbow and CoCo.. I mean, with The Hacks, Shouse and CV all going out there the last two nights, who else does he have? The mismanagement of the bullpen on Monday could really snow ball and affect the next few games like it did last night..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:02 PM CDT reply actions

One more thing..
I was quite disappointed today as I periodically checked the web.. Aquino didn't get sent down.. damn.

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

gotta wait
until Capellan resurfaces.  Can't call him up if he's MIA :)

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I meant
AWOL.  Damn mixed metaphors.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Vargas
Keep this up

by Matt @ Brew Crew Ball on Apr 18, 2007 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

Wow!
Vargas is mowin' 'em down...he can get K's even without Eddings!

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:12 PM CDT reply actions

you sure
that wasn't Eddings ringing em up there?
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Ya know,
In all the talk between Rock and Anderson about Vargas' last start, they never mentions Eddings' strike zone..

Maybe the Vargas' confidence is sky high courtesy of Eddings.. two K's in the first, nice start..

I'm way behind.. How did Weeks just stretch that to a double.. Nice legs Rickie!

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

Anderson
was also extolling the virtues of Aquino's ERA last night.  Not exactly a baseball guy.  I'd bet him and Joe Morgan would get along GREAT.
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

That name
shall not be spoken on this site.

Well, ok, you can make fun of him.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Mench
now five for his last seven.  Can't complain about that :)

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:18 PM CDT reply actions

Wow he could not have thrown that better
nice job Mench(I cannot believe I am saying that)

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

hm
I kinda like this line up.
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

Well.
It looks so easy when they do it like this :).  By the time Ned has to make bullpen decisions, the Brewers will be winning by about ten.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

LONG GONE
As it sneaks over the picnic fence, this announcer needs to go

by kjbsam on Apr 18, 2007 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

also a delayed call
it was very odd, like he was thinking..."hmm, I need a home run call, fast!"

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I am not sure he knew it was out
I have a big TV and I was not sure I thought Nady might have snagged it.

I have to be honest I don't hate Brian not yet at least but I am a less is more don't like the screamers at least not in baseball announcers ;)

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Hart gets on...
Now Damian Miller, with the second 2-run homer of the inning :)

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:23 PM CDT reply actions

nice to see....
corey get a hit...

by engbjm06 on Apr 18, 2007 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

nice productive first
now let's not give it back all night

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

Now...
if Vargas can just strike out two guys every inning, then we'll be set!

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

Is this a possible prelude
to sending Aquino down and bringing up Rottino (emergency catcher).  Maybe Melvin is going to make Neds job easier by limiting his choices?
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:30 PM CDT reply actions

I kinda hope not
eleven pitchers would be nice, but do you want Ned thinking he needs to find playing time for Rottino?  (Or mike rivera, or whoever?)

Ned would be great with a 22- or 23-man roster.  That's the problem.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Rottino
hasn't "earned" his playing time, and doesn't exactly have a super high ceiling, so I don't think Ned (i know, i;m giving him a TON of credit) would feel obligated to use him.

There are situation where I think Miller could be a very valuable pinch hitter but Ned can't use him cause he's the only back up.

I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

possibly.
Then again, you could say the same about Gwynn, and he's gotten a start, plus plenty of PH AB's with better hitters sitting on the bench.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

touche
i have no rebuttal.
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

that Ned Yost will do the logical or sensible thing :).

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Well.
Vargas can't beat 'em all.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:31 PM CDT reply actions

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:31 PM CDT reply actions

Wasnt a horrible pitch..
A lil above the knee, outer half.. Credit Jason Bay with that one.. Boy, that went a long ways..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

haha
yeah...too many shortstops all calling for the ball :).  Imagine if Graffy was at second...you could have four shortstops all circling around the same popup.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

seems that way.
Perhaps I'll go check on Runge's numbers.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

It aint the smallest zone..
But considering his last outing it seems fair..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

OK, I recind that
That first pitch to Graffy was low..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep
According to '06 stats, Runge looks like he's a little more pitcher-favorable than average, but not much.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Vargas..
Has that outside, knee high corner honed in nicely!!!

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

I hate pitchers who treat their at bats like that
why even bother bringing a bat do they not see guys like Bush helping their own cause

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 7:38 PM CDT reply actions

"Vargas doesn't wanna have a slow pace"
Brian anderson is annoying; and certainly not informative.

by engbjm06 on Apr 18, 2007 7:48 PM CDT reply actions

I just realized what I don't like about him
he sounds like he gets all of his information (about all teams) from each team's coaches.  So, everything he says is relentlessly positive: Wilson is a tough guy to strike out, the Pirates are playing well on the road, blah blah blah.

He's like all the beat writers for mlb.com rolled into one, mixed with some Rock-isms.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

that could totally be it...
I just want some personality.  That's what I liked about Daron.  He talked about the game, asked Bill questions; and drank beer.

I don't wanna watch a game with this guy; he sounds like he is at work wearing a suit and tie.

by engbjm06 on Apr 18, 2007 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

(not to say)
daron drank beer while he worked; but he did talk about miller products about every other inning..

by engbjm06 on Apr 18, 2007 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

In a couple of those post games last year..
It was obvious he was enjoying the product while selling it..

Hurray Beer!

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

And generally misleading..
In the last couple games he'said Estrada was "nicked", when he was dilled by a foul tip,, and JJ popped out in his last at bat when he actually hit a line drive right at the left fielder.. Little inaccuracies that keep adding up..

That all besides the fact he can't tell a slider from a changeup.. I can't belive I miss Darron.. Although at least Btain knows when not to talk.. but thats about it..

There, I feel better now..

Nice trade bait! thank you Kevin Mench for getting hot now!

Holy shit.. That is the worst play I may have ever seen in the major's..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Vargas
so far so good Melvin..nice

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 7:50 PM CDT reply actions

Mench
has been so solid for us this year..

come on Billy!

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 7:53 PM CDT reply actions

Breweresque?
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on Apr 18, 2007 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

well that

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 7:55 PM CDT reply actions

yeah...
hopefully they will fix it; i have him in fantasy (as most of us probably do)

by engbjm06 on Apr 18, 2007 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm
Vargas is suffering from Aquino-itis.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe not
at least he got someone other than a pitcher out.

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Claudio's getting loose with his command..
That strike zone may be a little low sometimes, but he's not giving Vargas the corner if he doesn't earn it..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

The high heat!!
finishing a couple Rats here tonight

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

wow.
vargas should be pitching in relief :)  he can be ned's new stopper.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

Vargas
It's refreshing to see a guy that trusts his fastball in a situation like this. I recall some other pitchers that lacked that sort of fortitude . . .

by BroadwayJoe22 on Apr 18, 2007 8:11 PM CDT reply actions

When..
did Vargas and Sheets switch places?

by molitorfan on Apr 18, 2007 8:12 PM CDT reply actions

well said.
except for the walks, this is a very Sheets-like outing.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

holy crap.
unbelievable.  un. be. lievable.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:12 PM CDT reply actions

phenomenal
Vargas has 18 Ks in 11 innings on the season

by keephopealive on Apr 18, 2007 8:13 PM CDT reply actions

Vargas is such a huge upgrade over #5's
Vargas is such a huge upgrade over #5's we have had recently.

by grant76 on Apr 18, 2007 8:13 PM CDT reply actions

I don't know
Personally, I really miss Ruben Quevedo.

by BroadwayJoe22 on Apr 18, 2007 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

don't worry
we can make fun of ruben quevedo whether he's on the team or not :)

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Ruben
A miracle-worker really. He probably could have turned Helen Keller into a diamond appraiser.

by BroadwayJoe22 on Apr 18, 2007 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Ha!
I'm chuckling at the folks who said the Crew got hosed in the Davis trade right about now.

I
was thinking the same thing...

by engbjm06 on Apr 18, 2007 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotta give Yost some credit here..
Sticking with the five man rotation, no matter what the off day situation, especially with their depth and Sheets health(not that I'm worried.. too much) And with the way Vargas is doing so far, its a no brainer..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

good thing the Brewers went down so fast
now Vargas can get back out there are strike some more guys out :)

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

Thank you Doug Eddings!
For giving Vargas the confidence to believe he is Ben Sheets.

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 8:24 PM CDT reply actions

oops
there goes Miller's fielding percentage.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:24 PM CDT reply actions

Little league home run
time to go punch some holes in the drywall

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

How long?
Vargas is up to 81 pitches through 4 1/3. We're going to have to relieve him before too long.

Of course if Dusty Baker were our manager, he'd just have him toss 130+ pitches...

by Acheron on Apr 18, 2007 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

good point
striking everybody out does take plenty of pitches.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

ok, that's embarassing.
how did he score from second on that?

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

that happened?
did I.oh forget it!!!!!!!!!

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 8:26 PM CDT reply actions

9 K's
"Its not easy to strike out Jack Wilson", as they say.

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 8:28 PM CDT reply actions

amazing.
My roommates probably think I'm crazy.  I'm laughing out loud at these strikeouts.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:28 PM CDT reply actions

WHAT??
watching on gameday, i can't believe that there were just 2 pickoff errors in a row.
wtf.
Carlos Lee (MIL) is traded to LAA for McPherson, Morales, Saunders, Kendrick, Wood, Aybar, Mathis, Jer. Weaver, and Napoli...

by ufoboy90 on Apr 18, 2007 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

9+2
That makes 11 total Ks for Vargas on the day

by keephopealive on Apr 18, 2007 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

alright...
let's get Claudio to double digits.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

Vargus
is in control baby...wooot

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 8:44 PM CDT reply actions

maybe should wait for the UMP call...just saying..

by iluvlamp on Apr 18, 2007 8:45 PM CDT reply actions

So at this point...
when Gallardo is ready, do you bump...Sheets? :)

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:46 PM CDT reply actions

he will get hurt
Sheets will blow/pop/strain something and solve the problem for us lol

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

What are they doing?
The Pirates are just staring at fastballs. If I may make fun of another ex-Brewer - it's like Scott Podsednik is their new hitting coach.

by BroadwayJoe22 on Apr 18, 2007 8:46 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah
I don't quite get it.  Some of Vargas's pitches look pretty nasty, but certainly not 11 k's worth.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 18, 2007 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Looks and sounds like a good crowd tonight
Not a bad crowd for a Wednesday night with school still in session. They are making a little noise too. Nice Brewers crowds can be like a golf gallery some nights

by WSB Chris on Apr 18, 2007 8:46 PM CDT reply actions

50% projection
6.1 K/9.

See?
Yost knew he this mini series with the Pirates was gonna be a tight one and he needed his 7-8-9 bullpen combo intact, so he had to throw a game or two against the Reds.. Brilliant!

Apparently, Turnbow has something new in the bag? A splitter, the Rock is callin it.. or is just throwing the slurve a little different? I missed the  pitches they were talkin about..

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

Whats the rule? 3 or 4 runs?
Oh shit, can I change my saves for Cordero prediction?

by throughhyperspace on Apr 18, 2007 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

Eh, its Neds fault
I can take solace in that.. should got one last night, missed one tonight.

honestly
I thought it was tying run on deck, so it could be as much as 5?

if you come in with a 3 or less run lead, OR
yeah, if you come in when the tying run is on deck, it's also a save.

BUT, if Cordero came in, walked a couple guys, and then the tying run was on deck, he wouldn't get a save for working out of it. But, if Aquino came in at that point and got out of it, he would get the save.

assuming
he COULD get out of it. which i doubt
Remember, you can't spell Jenkins without a "K"

well, yes
that's why I used aquino's name, for the ridiculousness of it.

anyone watch the Reds game
same ol same ol...with that bullpen they are NO threat.  Coffey came in and made sure a fantastic start by Harang was worthless.

Oh, and the Vampire is their holder.  Bwah ha ha

Can Andrson call more then two pitches?
Its either fastball or breaking ball.. or no comment.. a little more insight would be nice.

Either way, its a win!

what a 180 from last night!
very nice game..besides the defense again. Could our bullpen really get any better, besides of course, ahem, some hiccups.
