Game Thread #15: Going for the Sweep (again...)

It's Jeff Suppan versus Zach Duke at 12:05 this afternoon, and once again, Ned sends out a pretty solid lineup against the lefty:

  • Weeks, 2B
  • Hardy, SS
  • Fielder, 1B
  • Hall, CF
  • Mench, LF
  • Hart, RF
  • Miller, C
  • Graffanino, 3B
I'm impressed: he's sat both Jenkins and Counsell for two days straight, something I didn't think he'd manage to do.  I'm afraid, though, that the reckoning will come this weekend, when Craig and Geoff catch up, and Gwynn will get a start or two rewarding him for his bunting prowess.  (Which is pretty cool, but not start-worthy.)

A few things to read before, during, or after the game:

And here at BCB, you can read the series preview or enter the DVD giveaway, which has about 32 hours to go.

Go Brewers!

Missed the lineup game
I forgot the game was early today.  I see that Ned trotted out my guess from yesterday, though.

Weeks 2b
Hardy ss
Fielder 1b
Hall cf
Mench lf
Hart rf
Miller c
Graffanino 3b

Capellan..
Now why did he have to go F*** it all up by not showing up this week. Didn't he realize he was only one more Aquino blowup from getting called up? I wanted to see him up here already, but with going AWOL and all, I'm prone to let him rot down there for awhile.. Even though I never want to see Aquino or Dressens in a close game with runners on base ever again.

Hard pressed to disagree..
Unless the crew is up (or down) by 10 and no one is on base and everybody else is unavailable due to Neds brilliant bullpen usage.. Same applies to Dressens.

must win
i know its early in the season, but i see today's game as a must win game. in fact, i think a win today, and a sweep against houston are essential to the success of this season.

pressure's on today. it's a must win... ok, i'm kidding, completely. go brewers!

I'm not sure what you mean by "just kidding."  Didn't you mean to say that today's the day we find out if Suppan has earned that massive salary, and if he can't go the distance, it's time to deal him for gritty veteran infielders?  Just a typo, right?

Anyone else watching the mosaic right now?  The TV feed is our but the audio is Bob and Jim.  If they match up I'll be loving it but normally when I try to watch the game and listen to Bob and Jim they are behind by a couple of pitches.

From a McCalvy article
Looking for more: Brewers starting pitchers worked at least five innings in each of the team's first 13 games this season, the longest such streak to begin a season in franchise history.

It's not good enough, Yost said.

"Five-plus isn't cutting it right now, and we talked about that as a group," Yost said. "It's nice. It's better than three or four [innings]. But we need our starters to start going into the sixth or seventh innings a little bit more to give our bullpen a little bit of a break."

Brewers starters have averaged just under six innings per start, and in 13 games, only twice has a starter pitched past the sixth inning. Ben Sheets pitched a complete game on Opening Day against the Dodgers and Jeff Suppan worked seven innings two days later.

"The way we're trying to match it up right here, unless the bullpen is absolutely perfect, we're going to run into problems like we did [Tuesday] night," Yost said, referring to the team's loss in Cincinnati in which the Reds scored five runs in the seventh inning. "Everybody [in the bullpen] has gone three, four days in a row. ... I would like our starters to start going a little deeper into the game."

Going into Wednesday's game, Brewers starting pitchers were 5-5 with a 4.42 ERA. The relievers were 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

thanks!
quite telling right here:

Everybody [in the bullpen] has gone three, four days in a row.

BUZZER wrong. the 7th inning just has yost entirely baffled. yeah, tuesday was a problem cause the relievers were tired? It was Aquino's first back to back performance, and coco and turnbow hadn't pitched since saturday. maybe its time to figure out how to use your bullpen.

But we need our starters to start going into the sixth

BUZZER wrong starters are averaging 6, and with only two going deeper than that, seems pretty safe to say, without looking, that most of the brewers starts have gone 6 complete.

That was a nasty, nasty pitch by Turnbow.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:37 PM CDT reply actions

bullpen
now why not let CV bat for himself there, or better have pulled a double switch and pitch the 8th? if you are going to burn through your bullpen in a not-close game, i don't think you get the luxury of lying about how tired your bullpen is and then blame on the starting pitching to cover up your tuesday blunder yostly.

come on yost! i feel like he's close, and is about to turn the corner, and yet...

Turnbow pitches the 8th
Cordero pitches the 9th

The Yost has spoken.

In other games
Cards and Giants just started.  Wells and Lowry pitching.  The STL 4-8 hitters are:

Spiezio
Wilson
Molina
Taguchi
Miles

Ick.  No wonder why they aren't scoring any runs.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:40 PM CDT reply actions

ha!
I think about that every time I see his name

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 19, 2007 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Another walk
None of those balls were really that close.  Even the strike was right on the corner.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:45 PM CDT reply actions

meltdown
now what?
Bring Back The Old Logo!

by jacob on Apr 19, 2007 2:45 PM CDT reply actions

yikes
I guess he wanted to make sure Cordero was eligible to pick up a save.

by DC Brewer on Apr 19, 2007 2:47 PM CDT reply actions

Well I guess Turnbow is human
I still trust him even though this inning isn't going too well.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:47 PM CDT reply actions

despite
Turnbow's great start to the year, you still can't shake the lingering memory of last year and worry that at any given moment it might all fall apart.

Wouldn't this be a good time for Eldred?

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:49 PM CDT reply actions

paulino should be an easy out.
is CoCo up?

Other pitchers can come in here...
Does Yost know about the rule where you can actually change pitchers within innings?

by jax and rajah on Apr 19, 2007 2:50 PM CDT reply actions

Castillo?
Still no Eldred.  Is Tracy drunk in the other bench?

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

yay turnbow!
whew didnt want to see t-bow get yanked... worried about his confidence.
Bring Back The Old Logo!

by jacob on Apr 19, 2007 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

exactly
Ned made the right call by leaving him in and trusting him to get the job done.  Ah, the benefits of a 4-run lead.

by Bill @ Brew Crew Ball on Apr 19, 2007 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah.
the problem with using him to start the 8th is that he's the guy you want in the game, top of 8th, up by 2, one out man at 2nd.

but because he started the inning, if he's in the game at that point he's not pitching very well, then what do you do. Yost needs to leave himself more outs, that's why CV or dessens, or even aquino should've started the 8th, and at the first sign of trouble bring in turnbow in a lock it down role.

Could've been worse
Still, this has become an unnecessarily close game. How about a frickin' insurance run.

by DC Brewer on Apr 19, 2007 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

Unnecessary?
Another save opportunity for my fantasy team and for the DVD contest say otherwise.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 19, 2007 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

No triple
for J.J.  Still a nice day for him.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

Now Eldred
When he can't tie the game.  Makes a lot of sense to me.

Coco
How's Lee working out on the Rangers this year? Oh wait.

SWEEP!

by DC Brewer on Apr 19, 2007 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Game over
Ned wins 300.  Good for him.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

awesome awesome awesome
Mench or no Mench, Cruz or no Cruz, Nix or no Nix, Melvin took the Rangers to the cleaners.  Coco Cordero for 2 meaningless months of Carlos Lee?  Thank you thank you.

by Bill @ Brew Crew Ball on Apr 19, 2007 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

See the thing is
The rangers just had too much pitching.  They didn't know what to do so they had to ship him out.

by dixieflatline on Apr 19, 2007 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

cordero - 5 saves
no changes in the contest, nobody had coco for 5 or fewer april saves. everyone picks up (loses?) one more point.
