We Can't Win In Florida
The Brewers are supposed to be better this year, right? New team, new payroll, new attitude? All the off-field signs look good, but what happens? Jenkins hits home runs and the rest of the team doesn't produce. We had that five years ago.
I'm trying not to read too much into an anemic offense seven games into the season. But it's getting tougher to do that. Prince is getting his knocks, almost always with the bases empty. Bill Hall is looking eerily like the super-sub guy that Ned tried to make him before the injuries struck last year. Our best hitters right now are Jenkins and Counsell, a couple of guys who (rightfully, I still think) are hardly cornerstones of this offense.
So, what's the problem? Is this just a giant slump? I don't really think Bill Hall isn't going to hit below the Mendoza Line, nor do I think that Geoff Jenkins is going to hit a home run every time he starts. That's part of the frustrating of rooting for a team that gets off to a bad start. But I do have a theory. I think that all this talk about situational hitting, going the other way, moving the runner over--it's giving the batters too much to think about when they really ought to be simply hitting.
Here's the thing: the Brewers didn't give Prince or Rickie or JJ or anybody millions of dollars out of high school or college because they were smart, or savvy, or anything. They got they money because they are seriously talented in ways that most of us can never dream of. They can hit a baseball. Can they hit a baseball to the right side on command? Probably not. Arizona does a nice job of increasing everybody's confidence, but by focusing on what our young hitters can't do--especially a swing-for-the-fences guy like Hall--the Brewers coaching staff is preventing them from doing what they can.
Maybe I'm way off base. I've never been in a big league dugout, and I don't know how much coaching like that really affects a batter when they get to the plate. But I do know that, so far, the magical two-strike approach, go-the-other-way crap isn't working, and it's not working in the exact same way it didn't work for Butch Wynegar, either. And with guys like Jeff Suppan taking the mound two or three days out of every five (I definitely count Vargas in that category, maybe Bush as well), we need more than 3 runs a game.
I hope that, after tomorrow's game, we'll be able to forget all about the 0-for-whatever with runners in scoring position, and Bill Hall's early-season slump. After all, the team did score nine runs just yesterday. But somehow, that seems like part of the problem, not a mitigating consideration: having Jenkins hot doesn't mean this is a good team; we're just lucky right now.
Let's stop the Florida win-streak-versus-Milwaukee at nine games, and give Rick Vanden Hurk (and his parents, all the way from Europe!) a crooked-number welcome to the big leagues. We need one of those. Hell, after tonight's game, I need one of those.

Hart Burn
They should play in every game. Win or lose, scuffle or not, they should be out there, and the team will be much better later this season and beyond. I don't know what Yost is trying to do, but it's frustrating knowing that all that talent is being wasted for giving the old guys who are beyond their peak playing time.
With Menchkins and Crony in the lineup, I have little desire to watch this team.
I agree.
(it would help if Billy and Prince could start hitting in the clutch)
I'm gonna watch the Diamondbacks telecast to have Daron cheer me up.

I wonder what Hall would be hitting
Yes he looks terrible right now in Center but damn last time I checked he is a career infielder
As for Hart what did he do make a pass at Neds wife or something
as someone else said in the game thread this was a lot easier when there was no hope at all.
On a lighter note
"There's no way [Doug] Davis can through 3 strikes before he throws 4 balls, so lets see how many Reds batters can figure that out."

Poor Hitting Approach
And how many times do you see a professional hitting team like the Yankees do that? I don't care how talented someone is. If you swing at junk they are going to get you out.
The other problem the Brewers have is who does someone need to fear in this lineup? Hall and Fielder? How does that compare with Pujols/Rolen, Soriano/Ramirez, Dunn/Griffey, Lee/Berkman, or maybe even Bay/LaRoche? Through the blue and gold glasses most may say it's the the 3rd best in the divison, but looking at it through objective glasses it is probably the 5th or maybe even the 6th best in the division.
The Brewers don't have that one guy who will hit .300 avg .400 on base and hit 40 homers. They need contributions from everyone to be effective. This team can win 85 games IMO, but need everyone contributing on offense and the pitching staff to be among the elite in the NL.

I am not
anemic
i also would add that the pitching hasn't exactly been stellar either.
3-4's not so bad
D-throg - I am sadly forced, by my bad luck of living in Brooklyn, to see the Mets and Yankees play all the time. They swing at bad pitches too.
Tonight we'll knock Vanden Hurk back to De Pijp. Lekker.

R-E-L-A-X
1/23 of the season is gone.
There's a long way to go.
i was
but some ugly trends are developing. the platoons, menchkins and counsellino are eating the rest of the team. and they are hitting. fielder, weeks, hall, and hart are off to slow starts, and the correct solution might be to allow the platoons to engulf the weaker sections of the team...
For a little while anyway. but we know yost's tendencies, and corey hart is never going to get firing on all cylinders with mench taking his ABs.
also, hall is having trouble in CF.
I think the problem is that Yost is not a winner. He's got his brand of baseball on the field, and he's happy with it. And we are going to lose 4-3 all day. Except for wade miller and opening day, we've scored 4,4,3,3,3
That's exactly what yost plays for, 3 or 4 runs. That's why last night with 1st and 2nd only one out and suppan up he sacrifices instead of going to the bullpen/bench and going for the big inning.
Short story. I had season tickets for the UW men's basketball run to the final four ('99-'00). Dick Bennet Ball. I went to probably only half the games because it was such an ugly brand of basketball. For those that don't remember it was a play for 50 points, hope you win style of offense. Keep the game close, play good defense, sit on the ball. It was such terrible basketball, that even though we were winning, i couldn't watch. It made me ill.
Yost is beginning to make me feel the same way. He's trying to play early 80s ball where 3 and 4 runs and a decent pitching performance gets you the win. But the game has passed him by, and his infatuation with gritty, battling, average ball players playing over their heads is not fun to watch.
I'd rather see the youngsters lose 5-0 than see graffanino, counsell, mench, and jenkins lose 5-3.
It was easy, when the season started, to say to myself it'll all be fine once Braun gets up here... Yost has shown, however, that it might not be true.
graffanino, counsell, mench and jenkins are all playing above their head... and we've lost 4 of the last 5. What happens when they come back to earth?
ugh! The uneasiness is warranted for sure, it'd be nice to R-E-L-A-X, but i just don't feel too good about the season so far.
Meh, we just need fielder and hall to come around, and weeks to start relying on his power instead of his speed and they'll be fine. And though the trends are disturbing, those three guys should each play 155+ games.
ok, end rant.
Let's Go Brewers!
It is early

Not just this season
Pretty tough to blame Butch Wynegar or Davey Nelson this year, but I'm sure Sveum is being prepped to take the fall.

you're right
Lots more baseball. It's just we know our ceiling with these guys, and i think Yost is comfortable with that low ceiling in exchange for the consistency, even if it is consistent mediocrity.
Lots more baseball. Maybe, just maybe, in Yost's 5th year, and after sticking with his normal game plan for what, the 655th consecutive game, maybe tomorrow will be different, maybe tomorrow he'll say you know what, Corey's had a rough start but his ceiling this season is WAY higher than Jenkins or Mench, perhaps he should play today... Maybe he'll say, you know what today Dave Bush has been pitching pretty good, but the bullpen is not hideous, let's play for the big inning, and instead of having him intentionally create the second out, let's give Gross the AB...
Maybe. Lots more baseball to find out. I should relax. :)
the real question
If they're 10 games under at the end of April, is that enough? Does he get the whole season no matter what? Is Memorial Day weekend the key point?
This is a big year for Melvin just as it is for Yost. I can't see Doug letting Ned squander the whole year away without making a move.

Attanasion
I initially thought that meant that Ned was getting a huge benefit of the doubt, but now I wonder if that isn't a little more pressure for Ned. If the record isn't the only factor, then Melvin and Attanasio could come to the conclusions jacob outlined above, and fire him at any point in the season, if they come to believe he's the wrong guy.
My wife frequently reminds me that Ned is a likable guy, and a good face for the Brewers, so I assume that he will really have to screw up before he's fired. I can dream, though.

Sadly but truely
also - FLA is 0-2 vs. Lefties and 5-0 vs. Righties
also - that is the 2nd least amount of runs FLA as scored (if you are looking for bright spots LOL)
After going 5 games with out an unearned run the Brewers have given one up in the last two games and their unearned run ratio (which was about the league average last year) is ballooning.
Brewer bullpen is STILL outstanding!
