The Three-Ball Walk

Many of you probably caught this during the broadcast last night, but for those who didn't, Suppan walked Pujols with only three balls last night.  Pujols had the count wrong, the ump had it wrong, and Suppan let it slide:

Suppan got ahead of Pujols 0-2 before Pujols fouled off a pitch, took two balls and fouled off another. After the next pitch he was awarded first base by home plate umpire Dan Iassogna.

"I was mad at myself for going to 3-2 after being up 0-2, and then I saw him walking to first," said Suppan, who figured that maybe it was his mistake and he had walked him. "I looked at the umpire expecting him to call him back, but no one said anything. I just moved on and it didn't end up hurting me."

I'm not sure whether that says more about Suppan's control or his pitch efficiency!

ned yost
is on Jim Rome is burning right now

by Bigdogg2002 on May 1, 2007 3:41 PM CDT   0 recs

and
I think feilder is coming up in a bit, they just asked ned about the 3 pitch walk to albert last night. He took the blame, which was nice to see and he also said that if it was anyone but him, he might have said anything, but if he wants walk, that is fine by him :)

by Bigdogg2002 on May 1, 2007 3:42 PM CDT   0 recs

meh
Those shows are a farce.  Jim Rome rambled on about how great it must be to have Turnbow and Cordero, and how it shortens the game to seven innings, and isn't that great?

Sports journalism is a pretty sketchy area to begin with, but guys like Rome really destroy the concept, with their need to rub elbows and kiss ass with the figures they supposedly cover.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 3:48 PM CDT   0 recs

This is all well and good
We still got the win.  It had no effect on the game, and who's gonna call out a mistake on the Cardinals with what they are going through right now.  We'll take the series and be done with it.

by hyattff2003 on May 1, 2007 3:57 PM CDT   0 recs

didn't say
I didn't say I was a fan of him, just said that Ned yost was on, thought some of you may have wanted to know. And I do agree with you, he is an ass kisser

by Bigdogg2002 on May 1, 2007 3:58 PM CDT   0 recs

sure
And I was interested, and so I tuned in.  I'm disappointed that they waste time on the air like that.  The host kisses the guest's ass, the guest repeats the same dull platitudes over and over ("well, sure, I think we can get to the playoffs, but it's a lot of work left.")  Imagine the interview if one of us could get 5 minutes of Yost's time on a national network; we might actually learn something.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i don't know
what would you ask him?  I'm tempted to say that, whatever you ask him, he will give you a meaningless platitude.  Maybe we should try it:  you come up with some questions, I'll respond with Ned-itudes.

Oooh
  1. What areas do you feel Corey Hart needs to work on in order to be an everyday right fielder?
  2. Why do you hate Corey Hart?
  3. Did you come across any discussion of Leverage in your offseason reading?  Do you think about the concept of leverage in making game decisions?
  4. Do you sometimes cry yourself to sleep at night, holding a picture of Jeff Cirillo, and dreaming of someday being reunited with him?

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Answers
  1. With Corey--and this is true of just about any young player--it's about consistency.  We've seen some great things from him, but we just need to get to the point where we know what we'll get from him on any given day.
  2. Corey Hart is a very promising young player.
  3. I read a lot of interesting things this offseason and I've tried to incorporate some of those things.  So far, it's working.
  4. Rillo's a great player and the Twins are lucky to have him.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 1, 2007 4:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Awesome!
That was amazing.... LOL

by engbjm06 on May 1, 2007 6:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He's nowhere near as bad...
as anyone interviewing any player on TV for Fox Sports or Espin.  Seriously, watch any of the NFL shows and you'll see some real ass kissin there.

by hyattff2003 on May 1, 2007 4:01 PM CDT   0 recs

Agreed
I wasn't singling out Rome.  All of sports journalism has been led into the gutter by ESPN.  Blogs are pretty much the last place on earth to find honest analysis.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'll expand that
Blogs and the sabermetric community is the best place to get honest analysis.  Though I do see a need for the excellent analysts on Baseball Tonight and on Espin.  Sabermetrics tell us that he swung and missed.  They can tell us why he missed it.

by hyattff2003 on May 1, 2007 4:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ouch
I don't know if Kruk can tell us anything, but at least they run the video :)

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe not Kruk
But back in the Day of Reynolds, Ravich, and Gammons, you wouldn't find better on-field analysis.

by hyattff2003 on May 1, 2007 4:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yes
I liked Reynolds, and Gammons is obviously a great source of information.  Ravech to me is just a talking head, but at least he doesn't distract from anything useful.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I didn't really think about it...
till they did the search for Daron's replacement; but it's kinda weird that the TV guys are hired by the team. (kinda off topic; but it's another area where there isn't honest coverage.)

Glad I don't have to listen to Rick S. tonight; Brian A. is bad enough...

by engbjm06 on May 1, 2007 6:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree
Thats why i love this site so much! You get honest opinions from people just like ourselves, who don't sugar coat everything, tell it how it is. Uecker is pretty good like that, if its a bad play, he will say its a bad play, doesn't try to make it sound better then it was

by Bigdogg2002 on May 1, 2007 4:12 PM CDT   0 recs

Problem with Uecker though
Is that he can no longer judge a fly ball.  Plus he misses pitches.  There were entire at bats he misses because he's prattling on about fishing or Johnny Logan.  Not that he's bad, I just wish he'd be more game focused at times.

by hyattff2003 on May 1, 2007 4:26 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree about the fly balls...
Get up get outta here... and CAUGHT at the warning track!

(I love him; but i can't trust him anymore)

by engbjm06 on May 1, 2007 7:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
He used to never get those wrong, once he started the call, you knew they'd be out ... now the excitement needs to be tempered a bit.

The end of lefty-righty
Looks like Ned has thrown the lefty-righty matchups out the window.  Maybe he's going by history against Looper.

Rickie Weeks 2B
J.J. Hardy SS
Prince Fielder 1B
Bill Hall CF
Johnny Estrada C
Geoff Jenkins LF
Kevin Mench RF
Tony Graffanino 3B
Ben Sheets P

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:31 PM CDT   0 recs

is that official?
so, so, so glad weeks is back. was getting very worried about him.

sheets is a tough guy, and will pitch through pain tonight, but does anyone besides me think it woulda made more sense to just sit him for one?

Maybe he's going by history against Looper.

Which makes perfect Yostian sense since hart OPS 1.100 vs. Looper and Mench OPS 0.000 vs. Looper.

js online
It's from the news tracker on the jsonline sports page.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Who can tell with this guy
Quick and dirty list, using OPS

Weeks 1.339
Hardy .666
Fielder 2.083
Hall .555
Estrada .666
Jenkins .717
Mench .000
Graffy .833

Hart 1.100
Gross .333
Gwynn .000
Counsell .333

Well, it can't be matchups that Ned's relying on this time.  So, why is Mench playing?  Gotta be the gamer stat.  Interesting that Graffy shows some success, and Counsell is sitting.

New question for Ned:  What went through your mind while preparing this lineup?

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Answer
As a manger, you gotta play the hot hand, and Mench is the hot hand right now.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 1, 2007 4:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Creepy
It's like Yost is right here in the room with me.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 1, 2007 4:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

good to see
Good to see Weeks back in the lineup though

by Bigdogg2002 on May 1, 2007 4:37 PM CDT   0 recs

yeah
I agree, I kind of wish they would have sat sheets down for one start just to make sure he doesn't hurt it again and be out for longer then just the one start he would have missed had he just sat out this game, but I guess we will see

by Bigdogg2002 on May 1, 2007 4:40 PM CDT   0 recs

Decent lineup...
I just wish Hart could get his hands on some of those Naked Yost pictures that Mench has.

by hyattff2003 on May 1, 2007 4:48 PM CDT   0 recs

That show how he reaaallly borke that collarbone
