Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

Game Thread #36: Ride the Ronnie Miller Express

I can feel it. Today is the day Ben Sheets comes back. Oh sure, he's been here all along, but like a wallflower at the sock hop, nobody's really noticed him. Today, though, is the day he ditches the glasses and the telescope and does the African Anteater Ritual.

Okay, maybe. He did show some flashes of brilliance in the last game against the Pirates, getting a lot of swings and misses early on before seeming to lose his command. However, even if he's merely "good," as he's been so far this year, the Brewers stand a pretty good chance of winning, because his opponent is Mike Pelfrey, he of the 6.39 ERA and 10/14 K/BB ratio in 25.3 innings. Pelfrey is a former top prospect who is, despite the first sentence of this article, is definitely pitching for his major-league life. Let's euthanize him.

Go Brewers!

Yosty lineup
I know that if I'm looking to score a little more, I'm going to find a way to get Counsell and Graffanino in the lineup at the same time.

Gwynn rf
Hardy ss
Fielder 1b
Hall cf
Estrada c
Jenkins lf
Graffanino 2b
Counsell 3b

can't be true
ned hates us again

Is something wrong with Rickie?
Because we are facing one of the premier teams in the NL, and Ned is coming out with that prostate exam of a lineup?!?  Are you kidding me? I don't care that we are 24-11, he should be fired for that crap
That's not the Chirizo, It's Enrico Polazzo!

BLACKED OUT
fuck you FOX

Milwaukee
On WMLW (41) in Milwaukee.  So, FSN viewers in Wisconsin are gonna be pissed, too.  Unless they're in Milwaukee, that is.

Out here in the northern boonies
the picture's fine.  Channel 30 has the WMLW feed on. :)

Maybe its Ned's way of saying
That this is just another series, nothing more nothing less.

At least we have one of our better hitting pitchers going today.

by grant76 on May 12, 2007 12:11 PM CDT reply actions

awesome
way to start the game.  Clearly Counsell/Graffanino in the lineup is the way to go!
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

Yeah
1-6 know it's an 8 on 6 game

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Why do you suppose Graffy...
the right hander bats 7th.  While Cousell the lefty bats 8th?

by grant76 on May 12, 2007 12:20 PM CDT reply actions

does it really matter
how you stack shit on shit?
I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

by ESK on May 12, 2007 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I think in this case
the verb "bats" might be a bit too strong.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice start for Ben
I guess we'll have to wait until at least next inning before the trade talk starts.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:26 PM CDT reply actions

nice start??
are you kidding, he didn't strike ANYONE out.

I think he must be hurt.  Time to send him to the minors, call up Oxspring!

I have seen the coming of the Lord. Savior, thy name is Gallardo.

Bet
Any takers that Sheets will have as good an offensive day as Counsellino?

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:30 PM CDT reply actions

Actually
Counsellino probably has a much higher probability of grounding into a double play, so Sheets might actually have a better day.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Graffy did his best
That would have been an easy two if there weren't already two outs.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow
What the hell was that throw by Lo Duca?

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

Gwynn steals 2nd
Gwynn  is my 3rd favorite outfielder.  The Brewers could get rid of Mench, Jenkins and Gross and it wouldn't bother me at all.

I guess we could keep Gross as a reserve.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:35 PM CDT reply actions

The Brewers must be very sure that Braun...
Can play 3rd.

Otherwise they could have left Hall at 3rd, had Gwynn play center and lead off, and had a corner outfielder lined up in Braun.

by grant76 on May 12, 2007 12:37 PM CDT reply actions

Counsell
Turning outs into outs....during both halves the inning

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

Prince!
Nice drive for a ground rule double

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:45 PM CDT reply actions

Hey, a double!
Another chance for a one-out, man-on-third strikeout coming up soon.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:45 PM CDT reply actions

I'm sorry
That was excessively negative, even for me.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Negative?
If Jenkins makes an out, we have to roll through 3 pitchers next inning.  That's negative.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Not negative
It was stupid.  With only one out, it would be tough for Jenkins to end the inning

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Estrada!
RBI single.  Now Jenkins can swing without pressure

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:47 PM CDT reply actions

Remember that Mets game years ago
where something--a car?--caught on fire in the parking lot past the outfield? Was that 2002?

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:49 PM CDT reply actions

Well
While we could have scored a bunch more runs at least it is 2-0.  BTW Fielder for MVP.

by dixieflatline on May 12, 2007 12:49 PM CDT reply actions

Uh oh
Counsell got a hit. Time for Sheets to man up.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

ooh
Counsell gets a hit.  C'mon, Ben, stay even with him!

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

Holy crap!
That was amazing! They just conjured up two runs out of nowhere.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:05 PM CDT reply actions

jeez louise
Does anyone teach the mets how to play baseball?  A 2-run sac fly?

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:06 PM CDT reply actions

Now THAT was a thing of beauty!
two manufactured runs  - sorta puts Jenks' godawful AB in the first behind us

by heybatterbatter on May 12, 2007 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Counsel
turning outs into....

by grant76 on May 12, 2007 1:07 PM CDT reply actions

Those are the kind of things...
that make managers love Counsell. Unfortunately, they're worth approximately three runs a year.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Melonhead
I'm sure having Melonhead out there plodding around, and then going 0fer at the plate is still Ned's preference.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting
You missed Bill's RBI single?  It's not like he's out there doing nothing.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

OK then
Hall at THIRD and Gwynn in CF?  (I'm trying to win a bet with Jeff.) ;^)

by heybatterbatter on May 12, 2007 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

So...
They've given Prince Fielder two RBIs:

P. Fielder hit sacrifice fly into double play second to catcher to shortstop to first to shortstop, C. Counsell and T. Gwynn scored, J.J. Hardy out at second

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:15 PM CDT reply actions

correction
they just changed it to one RBI...

Ouch
Triple from Green.  Should have been a double, but it's ugly either way, I guess.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:30 PM CDT reply actions

ugh
wild pitch, green scores

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:33 PM CDT reply actions

Man
You've got to be kidding.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:36 PM CDT reply actions

hmmm
at 80 pitches, it looks like Sheets is done.  With his spot coming up, I'd let him finish the inning, and then probably go to Dessens, with Wise ready to bail him out.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

Silly Marty
Ben will still be around in the seventh to blow the game against the bottom of the Mets' order.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah
Why give up a good sac bunt opportunity?

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

i have a bad feeling
everytime Sheets issues a walk

by Bill @ Brew Crew Ball on May 12, 2007 1:48 PM CDT reply actions

Yep
The first one was plenty of indication that he was done for the day.  Shame that Ned isn't watching the game.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 12, 2007 1:56 PM CDT reply actions

Where did these come from?
Like he found his command all wadded up in his back pocket all of a sudden.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:56 PM CDT reply actions

You know what it was?
The added adrenaline from the successful sac bunts.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

well
a very strong outing overall for Benny, with one mistake--to David Newhan of all people.

Its bad enough the Mets lineup is stacked, but to ask us to hold them with Damion Easley and Newhan knocking it out of the park...its a tall order.

Anyway, let's get Sheets the win.

Let's get that power stroke going.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 2:28 PM CDT reply actions

Two straight innings
Graffy and Counsell reach base. Time to buy lottery tickets.

by battlekow on May 12, 2007 2:44 PM CDT reply actions

ha
Counsellino with 4 hits, a walk, and a HBP all in one game?  Astonishing.

by Tick on May 12, 2007 2:46 PM CDT reply actions

Hardy
Has anybody else noticed that JJ Hardy is leading the league in RBI's over the $100 million dollar man Carlos Lee?

by Tick on May 12, 2007 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

What to do about Gwynn
We got a major problem of having too many outfielders that should start on this team.  I think Mench has to be moved at some point this year, and either Hart or Jenkins could be moved as well....  However I think we would get a lot more in return if we were to move Gwynn seeing as he is already a "star" being the son of a 3000 club member.  I wouldnt mind putting Hall back at 3rd and putting Gwynn in there full time.  That would be a hell of a lineup.

Gwynn cf
Weeks 2b
Hardy ss
Prince 1b
Hall 3b
Jenkins lf
Hart rf
Estrada c

That would be really really really cool.

by Burt Doyle on May 12, 2007 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

I like it - that's two out of 200
but, face it, Ned is grooovin' on his platoon plan and, just like he stuck with Jenkins last year, he'll stick with the daily lineup rework 'cause everyone is feelin' good and you cannot argue with this UNBELIEVABLE start!!! If guys get dinged up from time to time, Ned is ready for that, too.  This is without a doubt a baseball fan's wet dream!!

by heybatterbatter on May 12, 2007 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions
