BRAUN IS UP!

San Diego - With third base turning into a black hole offensively in a lineup struggling in general to score runs, the Brewers could wait no longer to call up Ryan Braun.

The Brewers announced late tonight the 23-year-old Braun, their top everyday prospect in the minor leagues, was coming up from Class AAA Nashville. Club officials waited until after Braun played in the Sounds' game against Memphis in Nashville because they wanted him to get more at-bats after spending time recently on the disabled list.

Braun is expected to join the Brewers in time to be in the lineup Friday night against San Diego at Petco Park.

To make room on their roster for Braun, the Brewers placed reliever Elmer Dessens on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

sorry to muck around with your entry, but it's probably not a good idea for me to put something on the front page that reprints the entire j-s article :).  thanks for posting the link!

Fantastic!
I wonder what happens with Counselino?

what about the free agency thing?
If they'd waited a week we'd have Braun a year longer before FA.  Now we don't.  This sucks.

by willkoky on May 24, 2007 10:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's FA
but arbitration. It may not cost the Brewers anything since it's so close to what they figure will be the accrual time.

ya. i thought about that too...
but, in the end, it's not my money really...

i think they wanna win now; and not risk the team skidding...

2 Weeks
After Braun is the success we know he will be. Gallardo up and Graffy will have some horse crap injury

I was wondering about that too
Elmer's mysterious "soreness."  Let's hope it's not debilitating.  :)

I see a tender hamstring with Graffanino's name on it.  (There's an image for you.)

anyone else notice
that this year in particular, it seems like the dl is being abused a bit by clubs? i know most people here would be quite pleased to see dessens dfa'd, but melvin wouldn't be too happy if some team(the royals?) picked him up off waivers, at which point we're on the hook for $3 mil to two players who play(being the operative word) for other teams. iirc, jeff weaver had a "shoulder strain" and the angels seem to put maicer izturis on the dl whenever someone better comes off it. i don't remember this happening as much in past years. oh well, can't say i disagree. it also seems like the brewers have been auditioning spurling for the long reliever role lately and like what they see. he's been throwing up zeroes in spots where dessens had been puking up 5-run innings. garbage time is garbage time, but this is a team that can come back in a hurry if you can just hold down the fort a little. obviously, counsellino put the gun in melvin's hand with their atrociousness, but i don't think they would have pulled the trigger without spurling's recent success. still, they are gonna have to do something about geremi gonzalez, excuse me, dessens, in 15 days though. they're probably on the phone about that one right now.

by magoo on May 25, 2007 1:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're right
but one thing: if the Brewers put Dessens on waivers and somebody claimed him, they'd be claiming him AND the rest of his salary.  That's the reason Manny Ramirez wasn't claimed a couple years ago when the Red Sox put him up.

In order to be on the hook, the Crew would have to release Dessens entirely.  More likely (maybe, if we're lucky), we'll find some garbage trade with a team like the Royals where we "trade" Dessens for a minor league nobody, and we don't pay every last dollar Elmer is owed...just close.

Actually
They have 45 days, if you factor in a maximum 30-day AAA "rehab" stint as well.

let's not get too upset about the arby business
notsellingjeans's diary pointed out that June 1st was the "safe" date ... we're only a few days ahead of that.  What determines whether a player is a super two or not is where he falls among players called up that year.  Lots of guys have already been called up this year, so a May 24/25 callup is probably ok.

(I hope so, anyway, it would be silly to spend millions for a week of Braun, especially with Counsell OBPing .360 :).)

by Jeff Sackmann on May 24, 2007 10:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Gah!
I spend all night at work bored out of my mind pondering writing up a diary comparing Crony Counsellino to the other utility infielder options out there before the season as a response to everyone ripping on those two, and then the team goes and does something like this. I'll take it though. :-D

Oh, and if I'm reading the previous CBA correctly and it hasn't been changed in the new one, neither Graffanino or Counsell can be traded without their consent before June 16 since they were eligible for free agency this past offseason. Not that I'm sure you'd really want to trade either of them anyway.

As for the arbitration thing, I'd rather see the team win than be cheap. Rickie Weeks will likely be a Super Two player this year, but...meh. If the team was really super concerned about the arbitration thing they could just be jerks and option Braun down once the team clinches the division in late August. ;-)

One more thought
A quote I've always kind of liked is "go and the logistics will follow." I think it applies to the Braun/arbitration situation. If he is a Super Two, the team will just have to budget for it down the road. No big deal, especially if they're winning and bringing in all the extra revenue with that anyway.

Now I know why I couldn't sleep tonight
What great news!  Getting through work today is going to be like the last day of school.
The Tigers-Indians game is on the Extra Innings channel before the Brewers.  I am hoping that game is a two and a half hour blow out one way or the other.
Let's all agree to have patience if Braun doesn't have the best start.  In March if you would have told me on May 25 the Brewers would have a 6 game lead and Braun starting at third, I would not have argued with that!

NOOOOO Not Dessens!!!
He had so much potential!!

Actually - we must remember that these guys are normal people and I'm sure he know how much fans disliked him.

Sucks to be a ball player with a potential to make millions of dollars.

Just think
of all of the ways Neddy will screw this up.

How many starts will Counsellino get because they're seasoned, salty veterans?  Will they complain about playing time and thus get more playing time?  Will Braun and Corey Hart become best friends on the bench, seeing which one can spit sunflower seeds out further?

Also, I kind of felt we were already shorthanded when it came to pitching.  Now we're going to an 11-man staff for a while?

Having Elmo on the DL is fine for the short-term, but we can't get by with only an 11-man staff.  Moustache had better be working the phones: between Dessens, Counsell, Graffanino, and Mench, we have a lot of useless, err, seasoned veterans who are not contributing offensively and, at the same time, blocking those who could help.

Another complication
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I could swear that Laynce Nix doesn't have options remaining and he's only in AAA for a rehab stint. That will be another thing to watch in the coming weeks how they rearrange things because of him unless, of course, he clears waivers.

I'm a bit confused
Sheets looks like he is out for at least a start.  Elmer is on the 15 day disabled list.  Shouse is a very situational lefty.

So Braun comes up and Yovani does not?  Weird.

by grant76 on May 25, 2007 7:52 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It's a possibility
that if Sheets goes on the DL or misses a start, Gallardo or maybe Zach Jackson comes up to fill in.  The Tigers did this last week, bringing up Andrew Miller from AA for one start while Bonderman was hurt.

by Dutch on May 25, 2007 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Villanueva
is more likely to get the start since there would be no roster move needed.

by hyattff2003 on May 25, 2007 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

good point
I forgot about Charlie.  Gallardo/Jackson would likely be the option if Sheets has to go on the DL.

by Dutch on May 25, 2007 8:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem with that....
Is that the bullpen would be even thinner.  They can move everyone up with the off day Thursday.  But after that, if CV fills in for Sheeter, the pen will be very light.

by grant76 on May 25, 2007 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I WAS THINKING THAT TOO.
They should've D/L'd Sheets too, especially if he's going to miss a start, and give Gallardo a shot... And against a so-so offense in S.D.
Tony! Tony! Tony! Gwynn to the Rescue!

Question
Can you trade someone that's on the DL?  I seem to recall reading you can't do that.

by jackie t on May 25, 2007 8:51 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think so
It just doesn't seem to happen since usually there's no point in acquiring a guy who's hurt. But as far as I know, so long as the injury isn't concealed or anything, there's nothing in the way of a team trading for an injured player.

Utility
I was trying to lobby for Loretta as our util. infielder this past offseason.

Why didn't the Crew make a run at him?

by Dikembe Meiztombo on May 25, 2007 7:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

excellent point
career .299 hitter with a .765 OPS for $2.5 mil versus a career .259 hitter with a .694 OPS for $2.8 mil. Guess which one we got? They were both former Brewers, so you got the feelgood angle either way, but once again, an otherwise intelligent baseball man(Doug Melvin), proved to have a soft spot for "grittiness", "heart", and "veteran leadership"(it means you suck, but care). And please don't get me started on the ensuing Gargamel imbroglio. Not on Braunsmas. Good thing for all Brewers fans' sanity that both shall ride pine tonight.

So....
Loretta doesn't have grittiness, heart or veteran leadership?  I'm sure he's got some of all that in him.

Yay
35 minutes to the beginning of the All-Star infield we've been considering for years now - Braun, Hardy, Weeks, and Fielder are now all at the major league level. Wow. I am as excited as I was when I finally faced Mike Tyson in Punchout! Very cool stuff. Thank god its not a school night.
